Based on the number of beach pics showing up in my Facebook feed, summer has definitely arrived. But before you slather on your sunscreen, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released their annual findings for 2009. The information is extensive (they tested 1,599 name brand sunscreen products) and here are the key facts you need to know, along with some of their top picks from drugstore to department store.

The EWG found that 3 out of 5 sunscreen products (that includes hybrid sunscreen-moisturizers, lip balms, etc.) did not provide adequate sun protection and/or contained ingredients with “significant safety concerns.” Amongst the newer broad spectrum UVA/UVB brands now on the shelves, the EWG found only 5% were actually effective.

Is there any good news in this? Yes. Out of almost 1,600 tested, the EWG found 85 safe, effective sunscreen products they endorse. Here are a few of their top picks at every price point:

Ooh thanks for this. Gonna have to check out the full list. I am sunblock-obsessed! I've used the Olay moisturizer and really liked it. Right now there is a MAC moisturizer with SPF that is my fave

Thanks for providing this important info! I was shocked to see some favourites rated as ones to avoid.

So glad this info helps! I love the EWG. I use Lancome for the face but think I'll switching it for La Poche-Rosay now. And I love CA Baby. I'm also quite obsessed with the Nivea lip balms (they're Labello brought stateside). Was glad to see their SPF 30 made the cut (they have others with lower SPFs, too). is another great resource to bookmark.

Thank you so much for providing this link. I have seen many articles with the caution of "don't forget sunscreen," but nothing about which are best to use. Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for this resource! I have always been so diligent about using sunscreen. I used to use Cetaphil with SPF 15 (definitely on the EWG's Caution list), now I'm a raving fan of the new AntiPhotoAging 3-in-1 Daily Defense ( It's a moisturizer, antioxidant and broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunblock in one. Would love to see A/P/A on the EWG's reviews next time!
