Sun Savior: Murad Essential-C

We know the sun's terrible for our skin, but we still like to bathe in it. It's like knowing that a guy is SO wrong for you, yet you're instantly attracted to him. Sometimes, the worse something is for us, the more we want it.

Bad choices in men, you have therapy. Bad sunning habits, you have Murad's Essential-C line.

There's a cleanser, a toner, eye cream with spf 15, serum (amazing!), an age spot and pigment lightening gel, a night cream and a day cream with spf 30.

The line is meant to correct age spots and sun spots, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and combat lines and wrinkles.

A word (or several...) from the company:

"Everyday living is harsh on your skin. Daily exposure to sunlight,
smog, pollution and stress is the #1 cause of premature aging.
Murad's Environmental Shield® product line will help restore,
renew and protect your skin against sun damage, preventing and
reversing environmental damage through the science of cellular water™."

Vitamin C is so essential for healthy skin. It lightens, brightens and tightens. Basically, evening out the skin tone while making skin appear more radiant and tightening pores. It's most effective for sun-damaged skin. The Essential-C Day Moisture SPF 30 ($60.00) is an incredible summer moisturizer plus sun protector. It hydrates the skin while giving you daily UVA/ UVB protection (although if I'm baking in the sun - swimming or beaching, I still apply an SPF 50 to my face. I DO NOT want wrinkles!).

There's also an introductory kit for $39.95 that gives you a healthy dose of vitamin C in mini quantities. It contains all of the essentials and is a great starter...

Summer Skin Savers

Every year I do a post about how to keep your skin youthful and radiant during the summer months and I think it's just about that time to revisit the topic.

Here are my current 10 tips for saving your skin during summer:

1 - Use a primer so that makeup doesn't melt off. Primers give the skin a matte finish, absorbing excess oil while also aiding in keeping on makeup longer. Try the original: Smashbox Photo Finish.

2 - Keep skin protected with SPF. This goes without saying. Every day, wear SPF on all parts of skin that are exposed to sunlight. Click here for my current favorite SPF's.

3 - Go the extra mile and wear a hat and oversized sunglasses to protect your face from harmful UV rays. Note to Self: while a hat is great to keep sun away from your skin, it actually oxidizes colored hair quicker. But if I had to choose, I'll protect my face before my dye job.

4 - Keep hydrated. Water is great -- for your insides, but too much water on your skin will actually dehydrate it. Choose to spritz with a cooling mist like Caudelie Beauty Elixir, chalk-full of healthy botanicals.

5 - Peppermint lotions will give your skin that "cooling" effect the summer heat deprives you of. Try Avalon Organics Peppermint Lotion.

6 - Use an eye gel for summer and keep it in the fridge. This seriously works to get rid of undereye bags. I'm currently using Clinique's All About the Eyes Serum.

7 - Try a gel-moisturizer for your body... and keep this in the fridge as well. Something with a fresh, summery scent. I love C.O. Bigelow's Lemon & Lime Body Souffle. It's got that burst of summer scent with a very light gel-like consistency.

8 - Lips need love to. Protect with a moisturizing SPF balm. Try Kiehl's. They even come colored for a hint of hue (pictured).

9 - Shave prior to surf and sun. Shaving is like an exfoliator - it takes off all of the dead skin and, in turn, will take your tan with it!

10 - Waterproof makeup is essential. Combine heat, humidity, sun and water and you've got yourself a lethal combination of makeup meltdown. Waterproof your makeup routine. Make Up For Ever makes great waterproof eye liners called Aqua Eyes. Of course, waterproof mascara is key.

CALIFORNIA GIRL

Not two weeks after I wrote about the Environmental Working Group’s sunscreen report, I got a sunburn. Nice, huh? I don’t burn generally and wear SPF but some spots are more sensitive than others and my scalp rarely gets much sunshine. With my hair pulled back in a center part, a day in the pool ended with a not so lovely pink line across my head. Blushing with embarrassment maybe? Well, it won’t be a repeat event thanks to California Baby’s No Fragrance SPF 30+ Sunblock Stick.

I use the sunblock stick on my face whenever I’m spending a day outdoors, at the beach or in the pool because it doesn’t clog pores, is broad spectrum UVA/UVB coverage and perfect to throw in your bag wherever you go. But it’s also fabulous around eyes as it doesn’t run, for the décolletage where the skin is thinner (and tends to show the most sun damage) and yes, the hairline.

It received an amazing score of 1 from the EWG (10 being the worst on their scale) and as the company explains, “Our non-chemical sunblock stick employs a highly micronized, non-whitening titanium dioxide that scatters and reflects dangerous UV rays, offering UVA-UVB broad-spectrum protection.” The fact it is non-staining thrills me to no end because I love a classic black maillot and my old sunscreen stick could leave marks if it got on clothes. Plus, when my friend’s two year old wanted to put it on herself I didn’t have to worry if it she decided to protect her bathing suit straps along with her shoulders. California Baby is looking out for all ages.

Since SPF is an important part of a year-round skin care routine, California Baby also recommends using it under makeup “because it is non-greasy and creates a nice "cover-up" base under foundation or powder.” Add to that organic and sustainable ingredients and an endorsement from PETA, it’s a product that reflects eco-beauty at it’s finest.

You can purchase California Baby’s line of sunblock sticks and lotions year-round at Whole Foods and Target stores or online here or in a 2-pack here. xo a.

Post-Sun Skin Savers

So you've tanned it up beach - or pool - side and your sporting the perfect sun kissed hue (after applying loads of SPF, naturally). Now you want to know, what's next? How can you prolong the life of your new golden glow and keep your skin nice and soft without turning into a withering raisin?

Here are 5 fabulous post-sun skin savers:

What it does: an ultra-cooling cream gel that provides long-lasting freshness and comfort to the face and body. Ideal for after sun exposure, yogurt hydrates the skin, instantly relieving excessive heat and stinging.
Why I like it: It's made without parabens, sulfates or petro-chemicals so you can rest assured your body is getting the utmost magnificent treatment. Plus, it really is THAT refreshing.

What it does: Caffeine helps neutralize free-radical damage due to sun over-exposure. Macadamia oil and shea butter nourish and replenish essential moisture leaving a healthy, radiant glow.
Why I like it: Vegan and organic, this lotion smells delicious, is calming and gentle to the body and has aromatic properties which keep the skin soft for prolonged periods of time.

What it does: Refreshes and hydrates the skin. Ideal for use after sun-bathing and swimming
Why I like it: Love this line! Aloe is an amazing ingredient to soothe over-sunned skin. This lotion is light and ultra refreshing; totally fuss-free (but harder to find in stores!).

What it does: Enriched with Aloe Vera and pro-vitamin B5 to moisturize and calm the skin. Cools and soothes sun exposed skin and helps ensure a long-lasting, beautiful tan.
Why I like it: Sometimes things just feel more refreshing dispensed from a spray. Not to mention, I love anything that leave a little glistening after-glow on my skin. Apparently, it's not sold in the U.S. - correct me if I'm wrong here - (another reason to love it even more), but you can order online through the UK site, or buy a similar version from Herbalife if you dare.

Avene After-Sun Care Lotion $20.00
What it does: Light-weight, non-greasy cream-gel formula provides a cooling effect to the skin. Lipidic complex Biocymentine helps restore skin’s barrier and prevents moisture loss. Soothes, calms and cools the skin after sun exposure.
Why I like it: Ever since Paris, I have a particular affinity towards anything French and Avenue is a revered skincare line in France. It also contains Pre-tocopheryl, a vitamin E precursor known for its anti-oxidant properties so it's great for the tone and texture of skin too.

HELLO SUNSHINE!

Based on the number of beach pics showing up in my Facebook feed, summer has definitely arrived. But before you slather on your sunscreen, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released their annual findings for 2009. The information is extensive (they tested 1,599 name brand sunscreen products) and here are the key facts you need to know, along with some of their top picks from drugstore to department store.

The EWG found that 3 out of 5 sunscreen products (that includes hybrid sunscreen-moisturizers, lip balms, etc.) did not provide adequate sun protection and/or contained ingredients with “significant safety concerns.” Amongst the newer broad spectrum UVA/UVB brands now on the shelves, the EWG found only 5% were actually effective.

Is there any good news in this? Yes. Out of almost 1,600 tested, the EWG found 85 safe, effective sunscreen products they endorse. Here are a few of their top picks at every price point:

Tips For Staying Youthful In The Sun

Happy Memorial Day, ladies!!!

Long weekends are made for sunning! Be smart, be safe, there's nothing worse than leathery skin and damaged tresses!

Here are some tips for lounging poolside - or beach side - and preserving your youth:

  • Wear a hat to shield hair and face from the sun
  • Use a hair protective product to guard your color and your ends from sun, salt and chlorine. I like Matrix Biolage Protective Hair Oil. It prevents the drying effects of sun, chlorine and saltwater, leaves hair soft, shiny and tangle-free and adds instant shine and moisture. Safe for color-treated hair too!
  • Big sunglasses aren't only in style, they protect the delicate eye area from the harsh effects of the sun's rays
  • SPF, SPF, SPF. Face, body, fingers, toes... everywhere! Take it from Izzie Stevens (Grey's Anatomy), skin cancer is serious, even lethal. Sunscreen To Try: Clinique's new sun line is fabulous. It protects against both UVA and UVB rays and is 100 % fragrance free (a perfect choice for sensitive skin). The Sun SPF 50 Face Cream is great for the mug and the Sun SPF 30 Body Cream will protect the bod. Also invest in the Sun SPF 45 Targeted Protection Stick - a must-have for lips, scars and fragile skin areas (I like it for around my eyes - just in case my giant sunglasses slip off).
  • Keep hydrated! Drink tons of water... try adding a vitamin supplement for flavor and health. Super C Vitamin Mix Drink in Orange is inexpensive ($1.99) and loaded with 100 mg of Vitamin C plus antioxidants!
And, of course, have fun!

The NEED for ZINC (in Sunscreen)!

I was very discouraged when I recently discovered that my must-have sunscreen, Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Sunblock with Helioplex, does NOT contain ZINC!!! It still does contain other vital ingredients that do protect against UVA and UVB sun exposure.
It's no secret that zinc oxide is a very important component in sunscreens. Why? The properties in zinc actually block the sun completely by reflecting and/ or scattering the sun's rays (because zinc is a metal!) Remember being a kid and having your mother put those embarrassing colored zinc balms on your face (and nose) while frolicking in the sun? That's because zinc acts as a barrier from the sun. And as a child, our faces are very tender and we needed that total protection!
Zinc is a necessity for people with sunspots and melasma. The problem with pigmentation issues is that any light affects the pigment. Unlike all of the other fancy ingredients that do protect your skin, zinc completely blocks light (sun) from penetrating the skin's surface (thus keeping pigment normal(ish) and at bay).

So, with this in mind, I've found a great sunscreen that has broad spectrum UVA/ UVB protection and ZINC! It's also loaded with antioxidants and green tea - AB Sun's Advanced Anti-Photoaging Complex SPF 45 was developed by renowned dermotologist, Dr. Craig Austin. I've been using it religiously (although I do mix it with my Neutrogena because I still love the dry-touch technology) for the past couple of weeks. I do notice a difference in the sunspots. Not that they've disappeared - because, let's be honest, a sunscreen's not going to do that - but they haven't gotten darker. The sunscreen has a light redish/ brown color to it (I'm not quite sure why) but it absorbs clear. It's a tad on the heavy side for me (as I have very oily skin) so I use it sparingly... and mostly on the areas where I tend to get sunspots.

A word (or several...) from the company:
"With advanced anti-photoaging complex, AB Sun has been formulated to block UV radiation and provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection using micronized zinc oxide. With SPF 45, AB Sun delivers a unique antioxidant, free radical quenching and neutralizing complex whose composition includes green tea polyphenols and caffeine, two of the most potent ingredients in fighting the signs of aging. This advanced sun protection product blocks UV radiation and neutralizes damaging UV-induced free radicals, all with a moisturizing base. It’s your best defense against the sun, with all in one protection."

PRICE TAG: $45.00 for 4 oz

Another fabulous sunscreen that contains zinc oxide is Armada Face and Body Shield SPF 60. It's a skin lightening, full-spectrum (UVA/ UVB protection), fragrance and preservative-free sunscreen that actually fights photoaging and melasma AND lightens skin naturally while wearing it! It's a super light cream (better for oily skin) that absorbs clear into skin.

A word (or several...) from the company:
"The most comprehensive protection, with some of the highest protection factors ever against the full spectrum of skin-harming light: indoor and outdoor UVA, UVB, Infrared and Visible Light. Truly impressive power in a weightless, anti-oxidant créme that works for your skin's perfection. Banishes wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of photo-ageing. When used everyday, indoors and out, Armada also helps erase melasma. Protection so strong, skin lightens naturally. Arms your skin with renewed elasticity and vibrancy. "

PRICE TAG: $47.00 for 85 grams

POST SUN SKIN SAVERS!!!

July 4th came and went and hopefully, in between the party-hopping and Pina Coladas, you managed to score a nice tan (using a decent spf, of course). But what happens now? How do you maintain the tan while heading back to the realities of daily life? It's not like you can simply stay on permanent vacation (well, most of us aren't that fortunate, at least). What happens is, you buy yourself a darn good after-sun body moisturizer and you lather yourself up, head to toe, multiple times daily!!! And, in between your next jaunt to the beach or pool, you do a little color maintenance with a buildable color lotion (like Dove's Energy Glow with subtle self tanners ($7.99) or Shiseido's Daily Bronze Moisturizing Emulsion with gradual bronze color ($35.00). Both are great "in betweens" as they give natural color and they're pretty streak free (just don't go overboard on elbows, knees and ankles!)).

We've rounded up some of our favorite after-sun body lotions for hydrating your parched skin and preserving that healthy (natural) bronzed glow....

Editor's Picks:

Top Row; From Left:

Biotherm After Sun Body Milk - We go gaga over the regular Biotherm lotion and this one is no exception - it's like covering your naked body in a giant silk sheet - imagine the freedom... and the softness! Lightweight and quick to absorb, this body milk contains shea butter, apricot kernel, black current and seed essential oils to nourish the skin, helping your tan last even longer! $23.00
Aubrey Organic After Sun Body & Face Maintenance Moisturizer - Organic aloe vera soothes while organic Shea Butter, Rosa Mosqueta & Jojoba Oils reverse the suns drying effects, and Horsetail & Coltsfoot help improve elasticity. The result - a healthy, additive-free, long lasting tan! If you believe in the powers of organic, then this is the lotion for you! $10.75
Banana Boat Aloe After Sun Lotion - An oldie but goodie, this lotion is thick, rich, smells divinely beachy and is super soothing (thanks to the Vitamin E). It's like a dip in a cold tub without ever having to touch the water! And with continued use, the tan stays put - it doesn't peel or fade like those mystic ones (yuck!). And as my fellow beauties know, you can't beat the price! $6.00

Middle Row; From Left:

Korres Aloe Vera Moisturising Body Milk - Korres Body Butter in Guava is a Beauty Banter FAVE!!! and the after-sun aloe vera body milk is just as delicious - not as thick and creamy, this lotion is rather silky and soothing.... perfect for directly after sun exposure to calm and rehydrate the skin. It prolongs a natural tan with all of those yummy and healthy ingredients that are good enough to eat! $23.50
June Jacobs Spa Collection After Sun Hydrator - It's light, soothing, and has the consistency of milk yet smells like an orange grove... Shea butter, jojoba and palm oils moisturize, while aromatic healing botanicals and protective anti-oxidants soothe. Reduces peeling and aids in promoting the life of your tan - the luxuries of spa life for a fraction of the price! $34.00
Dr. Hauschka After-Sun Lotion - Can they ever go wrong? Fans of Dr. Hauschka will attest that his products are close to perfection. They're holistic and healthy and they work miracles (not to mention they smell unmanufactured... tres au natural... like my mother made them in the next room (if she were a chemist, of course!)). The lotion is rich in antioxidants, lightweight, and it features ice plant extracts ( like aloe, this succulent plant relieves itching, pain, swelling and redness) to soothe and hydrate skin after sun exposure. Great for a gal with a bit of a burn (although we urge - BEG - you to wear sunscreen and stay burn-free!!!) $22.95
L'Occitane After-Sun Balm Lotion - This is a truly special product... it's from Brazil - Para to be exact. The organic vegetable butter of Cupuaçu, harvested in Para, absorbs more than 4 times its volume in water. Since it's a balm/ lotion (and more therapeutic), it is ideal for dehydrated skin that needs immediate rehydration. Perfect after a long day of sun and swim. It'll halt that peel right in it's place and keep that tan truly bronzed! $26.00

Bottom Row; From Left:

Pure Necessities Aloe Vera Shea Butter Body Whipped Creme - Another Beauty Banter favorite, this incredible cream is like NO OTHER on the market. It is perfect parts shea butter (for moisture) and aloe vera (for soothing) and when you drench your skin with this heavenly potion, you really do feel like life is good... even great. The consistency is like falling asleep at the shore on a tropical island - the hot and humid air warms you while the ocean breeze cools you down. The shea butter (the humid air) is warm and rich while the aloe (the ocean breeze) is cool and refreshing - We love using metaphors!!! The cream comes in a variety of mouth-watering scents (try sweet-orange-vanilla... divine!) $18.00
Biotherm After-Sun Sparkle Cream - Not only does it soothe the skin and preserve the life of your tan (thanks to Pure Extract of Thermal Plankton, Pro vitamins B5 and E and trace minerals) it ALSO gives the body a subtle sparkly "glow." The cream contains pearlescent particles that immediately illuminate your skin and enrich/ highlight your already awesome tan. It's like having your cake... and eating it too (without gaining any weight!). How devilishly sexy! $26.00

SWEATPROOF YOUR FACE

We just divulged our secrets on sweatproofing your scalp, and now we have some tips and products for sweatproofing your face!

First, you'll need to start with a good, old-fashioned sunscreen (nobody wants wrinkles... and everyone knows that the summer sun is brutal for your skin's youthful glow). We're obsessed with Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock with Helioplex. It's lightweight, oil-free, fast absorbing, waterproof and sweatproof (duh), non-shiny, dry to the touch (unlike old sunscreens that are creamy and cakey and leave a white residue that reeks of sunblock mishaps), and, best of all, this sunscreen protects against UVA AND UVB rays (insert YAY's here)! We also love that it comes in a variety of SPF's - 45, 55, and 70 (our protection of choice). Oh yeah, the price is pretty awesome too... $10.16 for 3.0 fl. oz.

Next, you'll want to use a primer - something that control the inevitable summer oil and shine. Try Philosphy's Never Let Them See You Shine. It reduces skin shine up to 55%, decreases appearances of pores up to 36%, and reduces sebum up to 49%! It also contains antioxidants to protect the skin from environmental hazards while still providing long-lasting oil and shine control. Bottom line - wear this primer and your face will definitely be sweatproofed! $20.00 for 1 oz. (but a little goes a loooong way!).

When it comes to cheek stains, Tarte Cosmetics takes the gold medal. Their classic, aptly named Tarte Cheek Stain swept into the hearts (and cheeks) of beauty addicts all across the world. The latest installment to their cheek stain empire is no exception: Natural Swirl Cheek Stain is "an all-natural version of Tarte's award-winning cheek stain that swirls two universally flattering shades together." Cheek stains are awesome because, unlike powder blushes, they go on and stay on... all day... no need to reapply! They literally stain your cheeks for a natural, flushed, pinkish glow that even the scorching heat can't sweat off. The Natural Swirl is amazing not only because the color is so fierce and fresh, but also because Tarte is helping to save the world through its makeup!
"In keeping with Tarte's eco-friendly efforts, they've partnered with Sambazon, creators of the Sustainable Açaí Project - an initiative to promote positive change in the Amazon Rainforest through forest conservation, improved living conditions and educational opportunities through the sustainable management of the Açaí Palm tree. Açai is an antioxidant-rich super fruit that helps fight free radicals, promotes cell regeneration, has known anti-inflammatory and skin softening properties and combats premature signs of aging." We heart companies that provide us with beautiful products while helping to keep the world a beautiful place too! $28.00 for 1 0z. (apply sparingly... dab onto the apples of your cheeks and blot outwards).

Virtually every cosmetic company makes a waterproof mascara but how many can claim that the mascara will last 24 hours??? Well, Prescriptives Here To Stay 24-Hour Long Wear Mascara not only claims this, it also delivers the results! I literally couldn't remove this mascara with merely soap and water!!! This is the must-have Summer mascara - perfect for swimming, sweating, sleeping (you know those nights when you just happen to "fall" asleep at your boyfriend's house... you don't actually want him to know that your lashes are really blonde, thin, and ultra short, do you?). This mascara never comes off, never smears, never runs! AND, it actually works wonders on the lashes. The wand is plastic (our fave) which means that it can really get deep into the lash line, lengthening the lashes and coating every inch of hair with dramatic blackness! The wand also does wonders to separate lashes, thus unclumping unfortunate mascara goo. Here To Stay is waterproof, smudge-proof, and sweat-proof! $19.50

A lip stain is crucial in sweaty, humid climates. The last thing a girl wants in a bleeding lip (and by bleeding we mean your lippy is bleeding into the cracks of your mouth... yuckness!). theBalm's Stainiac Hint of Tint is the perfect lip stain that'll rectify the bleeding lip problem (and keep your lips matte all day long). Sure, there are a ton of lip stains on the market, and you can even use a cheek stain on your lips as well, but this particular lip stain is one that EVERY makeup junkie should keep in her makeup bag year round. Not only is it great for summer - as the stain literally stays in place ALL DAY LONG - but it's an obvious choice for Fall, Winter and Spring too! You see, if you apply a stain prior to applying another gloss or lippy, you not only enhance the color, you also secure the staying power of said lippy. Stainiac is sweatproof, food proof, drink proof and kiss proof. Just a dab allows for natural, flushed lips. A little more looks like you ate a bowl of cherries, maybe a lolipop. And yet, even more, and you're lips are smoltering hot in that sexy, ravishing red sort of way. It's all in the layering, ladies! Of course, this too can be used as a cheek stain. Just a dab on the apples of your cheeks and you'll look like you're blushing, au natural style! (NOTE: Stainiac is pure red, unlike Tarte's Natural Swirl Cheek Stain which is way more on the peach/ pink side of the color spectrum). $14.00
And if you're still feeling icky and sweaty, try using blotting papers... they really do work wonders to absorbs excess oil, rid the face of perspiration and diminish shine. Clean and Clear's Oil Absorbing Sheets are a handy on-the-go pick-me-up for shiny, sweaty mugs (a.k.a. faces). We like them because they wont remove your makeup and they fit nicely in your purse... amazing for nights out on the town (and G-d knows a crowded bar/ club can really get your sweat on)! And, of course, Clean and Clear has long been a skincare brand favorite for problem and acne prone skin types... so, we trust them! $5.29 for a pack of 50

We know it's hot... and humid... and sickly sweaty... so, stay cool, stay calm, stay sweatproof, and, of course, stay beautiful!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE!

Another vital product that got a lot of face time in Coachella was my MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner Stick with SPF 15. Sure, this isn't exactly a "new" product, but I adore rediscovering old favorites!!! And protecting your lips is tres importante... can you imagine gnarley, oozing, sun burned lips??? So unkissable!

The MAC Tinted Lippy is mega moisturizer with a splash of sheer color. It leaves lips soft and nourished with a slight hue. The perfect lippy for sun-time because it also has UVA/ UVB protection of SPF 15. Not only are your lips protected from burns and chapping, your precious pout also looks moisturized, colorful, and sexy!

I keep it in my bag and apply an upwards of 8 times a day. I LOVE how easily and smoothly it glides on to my lips. And with 5 sheer colors to choose from, everyone will find their special one! Personally, I dig the Strobe Current, a natural, plum with a golden red strobe pearl (very sheer). If you don't like any color, try the Strobe Beam... it's clear with a dash of strobe pearl!

So next time you're venturing to the beach, or you just want a simple lippy that hydrates and protects against the sun's harsh rays, remember my new summer fave, MAC'S Lip Conditioner!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE!

A perfectly tanned face, sans the sun, is always a feet worth working toward. What if I told you that you can get a healthy bronzed glow AND hydration all in one dollop of cream?

Allow me to introduce Tarte's Sunburst Beaded Bronzing Facial Moisturizer - an oil-free moisturizer with a splash of bronzed color.

Let me clarify. It's not a tinted moisturizer, as it doesn't have a foundation base, thus it doesn't aid in evening skin-tone or coverage. So, you can still keep your Laura Mericer's tinted moisturizers in your makeup bags! This is a bronzing moisturizer... it adds a healthy does of color, leaving you looking like you just stepped out of Mexico. Or Hawaii. Or the Caribbean. You get the point.

Here's how it works. The bronzing beads in the moisturizer BURST on contact with skin, delivering exactly the right dose of sun-burnished glow. Amazing!

Hair-crazed Jenny
told me that I must try this product immediately (she's OBSESSED.. says her skin has never looked healthier) and she was right.... it does not disappoint! In fact, it leaves my skin with such the perfect tanned color, I really never need the sun again.... ever!!!

Try it and save yourself years of inevitable wrinkles and sun-damage!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE!

I spent the entire weekend in a salt water swimming pool (don't ask... salt water pools are the rave in L.A.). Although salt water is great for the skin and, unlike chlorine, it doesn't turn your hair green, it still does dry out my mane.

So, naturally, I needed a heavy-duty conditioner after my Sunday night wash.

I've used Pureology products before. I happen to really like their ColourMax system with the AnitFade Complex, great for color-treated hair, and the UVA/ UVB sun protection, great for summer.

And now I've discovered a new must-have. Pureology's NANOWORKS Hair Masque. It too is equipped with the AnitFade Complex (to maintain color), and an Anti-Aging Complex, which restores hair to a more youthful condition. The mask is thick, but works quickly - only 5 minutes one to two times a week. It's infused with a plethora of antioxidants like pomegranate and blueberry to restore and revitalize the hair shaft.

Summer hair is easily destroyed... sun, swim, ocean - all great for fun but bad for hair. Take precautions - a five minute masque a week could save your hair from permanent damage!!!

A Few Of My Favorite Things...

Lippies with SPF... a necessity now that the sun is finally starting to shine again!

Matahari Plumping Lip Gloss with SPF 15 - I've loved this product FOREVER... I used to get it at my tanning salon. It's glossy but not gooey and it totally plumps the pout. It's clear so it can be worn over virtually any colored lippy... AND it smells like vanilla! YUM!

C.O. Bigelow's Lip Formula with SPF 15 - Sweet almond and cotton seed oil lend to all-day moisture.  This has a waxier consistency so it's great for sun burned and wind burned lips.  It's still glossy - just a bit more subdued... AND it protects against UVA and UVB rays... must-have lippy for the beach bag!

Cherriflip Super Balm with SPF 15 - This is a great, simple gloss that truly stays on. Again, it's clear so you can wear it alone for a juicy pout, or over a colored lippy. To be honest, I have absolutely no idea where to buy this product but if anyone out there does, please let me know!

Kiehl's Lip Balm with SPF 15 in Hue No. 58B - An old time favorite, this lippy gives a dash of red for that flushed, just been kissed look.  It's incredibly moisturizing and very natural... not glossy (it's a balm, folks!), but soothing and inviting!

Revlon Super Lustrous Shiny Sheers with SPF 15 - These a more like lipsticks but they have sun protection and they come in 10 sheer shades.  They offer a dose of shine along with a subtle burst of color.  I LOVE the sheer mauvy star - a great, summer pink!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE!

Spring is almost here!!!! And that means, it's time to work on your tan! I love me some tinted moisturizers with buildable color... they're a clean, hassle-free, streak-free way to get bronzed skin without a tanning salon or the harsh effects of the sun.

British cosmetic giant, Boots, makes a fabulous lotion with buildable color! It's part of their No 7 line of skin products. Naturally Sunkissed Body Moisturizer offers you just that - a natural sun kissed tan! It's not streaky and it doesn't stain your clothes. It's the perfect amount of color without screaming - "I'm faking my tan!" And it doesn't have that chemical smell that many of the buildable color lotions unfortunately have. The lotion applies easily and color looks even so you don't need to exfoliate prior to use! AND, it's only $9.99!!! This is my must-have Spring self-tan lotion!

Also from Boots, No7 Instant Sunshine Shimmer Gel! It's a shimmery golden gel-like substance that can be applied alone, or mixed with lotion, to add instant color and sparkle for a healthy glow! I use it in conjunction with the Sunkissed Body Moisturizer when I'm hitting the town and I need a little extra color on my arms and legs. The company says, "It's just so versatile. Mix with your foundation or body cream, or use as a bronzer or eye colour." A little goes a long way so there's no need to overindulge.

Gold is in... whether it's as a shadow or on your skin! Don't have naturally tanned skin? Fake it!!!

The Truth About Sunblock!!!

Until recently, sunblock protected against UVB rays but NOT UVA rays. UVB rays cause burns while UVA rays cause wrinkles and a greater risk of skin cancer. So, you have to wonder, why would American sunscreens opt out of UVA protection?

In America, the amount of UVA protection is not quantified, however, in Europe it is. Thus, we end up with SPF protection of up to 70 yet little to no protection against the harsh and potentially deadly rays of UVA.

Mexoryl, a breakthrough ingredient creating buzz through it's ability to protect against UVA filters, is commonly used in European sunscreens but rarely used in American ones. This is due to the FDA not approving the ingredient.

However, in 2006, L'oreal, which also owns the patent to Mexoryl, was given the go ahead to use the drug in their sunscreens. From my understanding, it is only legal in SPF 20, nothing higher. If you want a higher SPF, you have to get it in Europe or Canada.

Sunscreens to buy on line with Mexoryl (La Roche has a massive arsenal of products to choose from):

La Roche Posay Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics SPF 40 Sunscreen Spray
with Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL

La Roche Anthelios XL 60spf

La Roche-Posay Anthelios TINTED SPF 50+ Creme

L'oreal UV Perfect Ultimate Protection Fluid with Mexoryl XL SPF 50
(although, for some reason, I can't find this anywhere on line!)

L'oreal RevitaLift UV with Mexoryl SPF 15 (this one is the only Mexoryl sunscreen sold on the L'oreal website in the United States... I guess that 15 is better then no protection.)

I recently discovered a fabulous sunscreen for sensitive skin that not only protects against UVA and UVB rays, but it's also ultra-sheer, with dry touch technology, PERFECT for oily, acne-prone and sensitive skin types. AND you can purchase it in the states!!!

Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Sunblock with Helioplex with SPF 55 or SPF 70

What is helioplex?

Neutrogena says, "Helioplex™ technology contains two FDA approved sunscreens, Avobenzone and Oxybenzone. Avobenzone does an excellent job of blocking UV rays—especially UVA rays—but its protection against UVA rays can weaken after prolonged sun exposure. Helioplex™ technology combines Avobenzone with Oxybenzone so that Neutrogena Sun Protection products can effectively screen out UVB burning rays—and help stop UVA rays from penetrating skin's surface layers."

It's not Mexoryl, but it's a start... and definitely better then the other sun protection products on the market!

So next time you feel like baking in the sun, PLEASE remember to protect your skin from both UVB AND UVA rays!!! Sunscreen isn't effective if it's just guarding you from UVB... in fact, that's only 1/3 of the protection needed (fine for sun burns, but not for skin cancer)!

And why won't the FDA approve Mexoryl in higher SPF's??? We need to demand more (or fly to Europe to buy our sunscreens...)!

The Calm After the Storm

New Years holiday was a blast. I would have posted sooner but I've been recuperating. I spent five days in Florida with my dear friend Kimberly Stewart. We started off the trip in Palm Beach where I hung out and beauty shopped with hair-crazed Jenny. Then we ventured to Miami for the big New Years Eve bash (and stayed for about 24 hours). I returned back to Los Angeles on the 1st and it has literally rained every day since!

Florida left my skin very tan and my hair very blonde. I used spf 30 on my face and pranced around in a straw hat and yet I still came home with blotchy dark spots from the sun!!! I have decided to up the spf to a 40 for my next tanning adventure!

As far as make-up is concerned, while lounging poolside, less is more. My advice: invest in a great sunblock, a hydrating lippy with a dash of color, a black mascara, a fun hat and a kick-ass pair of shades (mine are vintage gold... love them!)

I kept my beauty routine very very simple. MD Forte Aftercare Environmental Protection Cream SPF 30 on my face, my very favorite au natural, vacation go-to chap stick, Labello in cherry, for my lips. It provides the perfect splash of red and yet it still moisturizes! And for my eyes, my new must-have mascara... Fresh Supernova. I'll be doing an entire post on this incredible product later today. But I will say this - I convinced Kim, Jenny and guest-blogger, Di, to purchase the mascara and so far, no complaints from anyone!

Here's a pic of my straw hat, my kick-ass shades, and Labello-glossed lips tanning poolside/ beach side in Palm Beach (yes, that was the view that I woke up to EVERY morning... sigh):

As for NYE make-up, here's what I used:

  • MAC Eye Shadow Quad in Gentle Fume - 4 sultry greys and blacks to produce the perfect silver smokey eye.
  • MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack - I was going for the dramatic cat eye liner look. This MAC liner is malleable and very easy to navigate. I lined the bottom of my eyes with MAC Soft Sparkle Eye Pencil in Night Sky, a black pencil infused with silver sparkles - perfect for party eyes!
  • Nars Outlaw for my cheeks with a dash of MAC Northern Light Skin Finish to highlight my cheek bones.
  • On my lips, I wanted glossy and nude. I chose MAC Lustre Glass in Instant Gold AND MAC Lustre Glass in A37 from the Holiday Curiosities Kit.
  • And, of course, I finished it all off with about 8 coats of Fresh Supernova Mascara!
Here's a pic from NYE:

Kimberly actually designed that AMAZING dress that I'm wearing... I love having talented friends!!!

On Kim's lips, my new favorite red lippy from MAC's Originals collection, Russian Red, an absolute god-sent red hue! (that's it pictured on the left!)

Well, that's all for now! Hope you had a beauty-full Holiday!

Summer Do's and Don'ts... A few of my favorite things....

DO let your face soak in the salt water. Salt water is a natural drying agent - extracting those black heads and healing any sort of acne.

DON'T let your hair soak in the salt water. The ocean strips your hair of it's color and shine AND dries it out. Try spraying some sort of hair defense spray (We're loving Pureology's Antifade Complex UV Hair Colour Defense! Thanks to the Silver Spoon Beach House, I was given a sample of this color protection spray. It's amazing! Helping to reduce breakage and protect your hair from the sun and salt.)

DO layer your face and lips with Sunblock! Try Lancome's SÔLEIL ULTRA EXPERT SUN CARE - SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Cream for Sensitive Skin! To completely prevent wrinkles and sunspots, you need a high SPF!

DON'T leave a white residue (or any color) of sun protection ANYWHERE on your face (this includes lips!) Colored zinc is soooo 1990's!

DO wear lighter, more sheer colors on the face. Try Mark by Avon's Summer line. The Shimmer and Shine tubes are fab for easy lip shine! Also, so well priced at $5.00 a pop! Try Marshmallow, the perfect pink.

DON'T layer your face with reds and blacks. Bold is great, just not for summer make-up!

DO wear lose, clothing... breazy and beachy. White is a summer staple. Beach attire should be more relaxed and tropical then every day attire. Try a cover-up by Float Designs. We're loving the Sun-Soaked Pullover in white - perfect worn alone for the beach, add some jeans and flats and it's great for a casual dinner as well!

DON'T dress like you're a club rat. Leave the stiletto's and boots at home! The sand is no place for your Jimmy Choo's.

DO wear a bathing suit that suits your specific body type. Try Syla Swimwear - beautiful, fun and flirty swimsuits for every body type! The designer, Sylvie Cachay, worked at Victoria's Secret before launching her own line. And let me tell you, these bikini's are God sent! Pure beach bliss!!! (We're loving the Carolina!)

DON'T wear a string bikini just because it's "in." Too much skin is just as bad as too little.

DO keep your body hydrated! Inside and Out! Drink tons of water and use a refreshing spray to offer refuge from the sun and heat. Try Banana Boat's Aloe After Sun Gel Ultramist Continuous Spray. It smells sweet, replenishes moisture, aloe vera clams the skin AND it actually refreshes! We love this product!

DON'T slather on tons of oil just because you want a fast and easy tan. Burning is sooo not a cute look. Nor is skin cancer!

And lastly, DO have fun! Summer is all about the fun...

Make-Up Banter with Sole Alberti...

Make-up artist, Sole Alberti, did a fabulous job creating the flirty and sexy faces of Veronica and the V-Squad for my short film, I HEART VERONCIA MARTIN. She used the same high-school feel (sans the dew) to paint the face of awkward outcast, Darby.

(Sole Alberti (left) with Cameron Richardson/ Veronica Martin (right)

Below, read Sole's step by step make-up application process and discover the products that she used!

"For the girls of I Heart Veronica Martin, I started off by using a light, oil free lotion with spf 30 by Dermalogica. I wanted to keep their lovely faces protected from the intense sun. I then used TruBlend foundation by COVERGIRL.

I wanted to give the girls a natural dewey look so I used COVERGIRL TruBlend Naturally luminous blush powder in pure romance. It creates a beautiful rouge on the apples of the cheeks with just the perfect amount of sparkle and shine. I then used natural tones on the eyes ranging from light browns to neutral pinks and beiges.

On their eyelashes, once they were curled, I applied the COVERGIRL Lash Exact waterproof mascara. They were doing a lot of cheering and dancing in the scorching heat, so I wanted to make sure the mascara did not run. It worked wonders! I was also very pleased with the wand of the mascara. It allowed me to get really close to the lash line and separate the eye lashes in the most fabulous fashion.

On their lips, I used a two step lip gloss by COVERGIRL Outlast Double Lip Shine in pink 205 and Clear 005 to give their lips extra shine.

For the cheering scenes, I used Clarins After Sun Moisturizing Spray all over their bodies for a natural shimmer and glow. In addition, I mixed water and glycerine to manufature that sexy, sweaty effect. After a long day, the girls still looked perfectly dewey and beautiful!

On Carla Gallo (Darby), who was not doing any cheering, I stuck to the same look I gave the other girls but kept the shine down and matted the colors a little bit. I wanted to create the effect that she was low maintenance with her look. Just very simple and casual. I used the same products but with a way lighter touch.

All in all the girls all looked amazing on and off screen. Since they were being shot in HD which picks up every pore, I made sure that the skin was very even. The foundation was great for that. I had to get in real close and make sure they were always perfect. They of course made my job very easy with their beautiful skin and glowing features!

GO V-SQUAD!!!!!"

(Veronica, V-Squad, Darby and the Director... ME!!!)

***Special thanks to Brent Poer who hooked us up with the Cover Girl Cosmetics. Without Brent, this movie would cease to exist! We Heart You, Brent!!!***
