TREND ALERT: RED CARPET WAVES

AS seen on the red-carpet at the Golden Globes, waves are in trend. Most noticeably, Megan Fox rocked some pretty awesome waves.

Here, Sam Villa gives us the deets on how to recreate at home:

Red Carpet WavesTools Needed: Sam Villa Signature Series Wide Tooth Comb, Marcel iron and Redken Forceful 23 hairspray

·      Begin with a diagonal section
·      Gather the section, elevate to 90 degrees with thumb and index finger and over direct to the corner of the eye
·      Place the Marcel iron in front of the section with the barrel of the iron behind the section.  (Be sure to keep the hair in fingers close to the barrel at all times)
·      Holding the section, face thumbnail up and then twist the hair so thumbnail is facing the floor, slide down and wrap.
·      Slide the hair up the barrel making sure to keep thumbnail close to the barrel without closing the blade.  (Closing the blades of the barrel will produce lines of demarcation inside the crest)
·      Repeat the motions until the end of the section: Wrap, twist - thumbnail up, thumbnail down, wrap, twist, thumbnail up, thumbnail, down, wrap….
·      Once to the end of the section, drop the elbow of the arm that is holding the Marcel iron, keeping hold of the section
·      While holding the end of the section with the thumbnail turn the Marcel iron in the opposite direction for more tension allowing the heat to do its job.  (This creates the tension in the twists – the twist is the crest and the flat wrap is the valley)
·      Release thumb and place the palm of hand underneath the barrel of the Marcel iron
·      Catch the hair in palm when released from the barrel.  (If hair is just dropped without catching it, the section will stretch and become loose)
·      With the section in palm, spray two shots of Redken Forceful 23 hairspray
·      Pancake and compress the section in both palms (The hair will be very hot!)
·      Allow the hair to cool – be patient
·      Release the section from palm
·      Take wide tooth comb, using the end with the teeth spaced apart, place the palm of hand behind the section
·      SLOWLY comb through the section to the ends resulting in beautiful Red Carpet Waves.
·      Continue with diagonal sections to complete the head

GET THE LOOK: JANUARY JONES

At the Golden Globes 2010, January Jones definitely let it all hang out! And WOW did she look amazing.
Here, Frederic Fekkai stylist Renato Campora dishes on how to get the look:

INSPIRATION:
Campora was inspired by the styles of the 1960’s, which he believes is one of the most striking decades for beauty. His look created for January channels old Hollywood glamour, with a modern twist that is full of volume and timeless elegance.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:
On wet hair, Campora began by applying Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Styling Whip to create volume and Fekkai Coiff™ ContrĂ´le Ironless Straightening Balm to smooth out the hair.  He parted the hair to the side and blow dried using a round brush.  To create waves, he put hair in hot rollers and let them sit for 10 minutes.  Once he took the rollers out, Campora brushed through the hair creating volume and constructing shape for the style. To finish off her look, Renato sprayed Fekkai Coiff™ Sheer Hold Hairspray for all night hold.

Chanel Beauty is responsible for that ravishing red pout. Here, the face:

JANUARY JONES / Makeup Artist Rachel Goodwin

Beauty Inspiration:
"January's look was all about strength - there was nothing demure about it! I wanted to go for a super strong brow, and a high gloss red lip.  90's
supermodel meets old Hollywood glamour!"

Beauty Tip:
"The makeup was simple with two strong elements.  I prepped her skin with CHANEL Sublimage Concentrate. I then sculpted her cheeks with CHANEL Bronzing Makeup Base.  On her lids, I used a wash of champagne coloured shadow, CHANEL Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Liberty.  I created a strong, bold defined brow with the CHANEL Perfect Brows palette, and applied two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir.  Finally, I knew I wanted to go for a glossy red lip as opposed to a matte red, to keep the look fresh
and not too retro.  I used an amazing red gloss, CHANEL Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Excess, to complete January’s strong red carpet look.”

GIRL CRUSH: Ashley Greene at the VMA's

mark Brand Ambassador and vampire sexiness, Ashley Greene showed off her human hotness at the MTV VMA's. Makeup Artist Vanessa Scali created the look. This is an easy and affordable face that anyone can recreate. I'm loving the sultry eye with the nude lips and perfectly coiffed honey highlights. So chic.

Here are the deets:

Inspiration
“I wanted to create a smoldering, gunmetal eye with only a hint of color in the cheeks, and a soft natural mouth.”

Face
”Ashley has nearly flawless skin, so I used foundation and concealer sparingly. First, I used the mark Foundation Brush to apply mark Speedway Do Everything Makeup in Natural only where needed and blended in with my fingers. I find that using my fingers to blend foundation heats the product just a bit and leaves a seamless finish. Next, I applied mark Good Riddance Hook Up Concealer in Medium/Deep under her eyes, followed by a light dusting of mark Matte-nificent Oil Absorbing Powder in Buff/Natural to her t-zone area. For her cheeks, I applied mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Cheeky to the apples, blending outward toward the cheekbones. Then, to accentuate her high cheekbones, I applied mark Get Bright Hook Up Highlighter in Natural and blended in toward the apples of her cheeks. The combination of the creamy textures and hint of color blend to make the cheeks look pretty and luminous.”

Eyes

“First, I applied mark I-mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Corset to her lid, blending just over the natural crease and extending outward to elongate her eyes. I used the same color under her bottom lashes for a soft smoky effect. For a kick of shine, I added a touch of mark Get Bright Hook Up Highlighter in Natural to her brow bone. Eye liner is truly the key to this look – it adds a depth of color and edge that make this eye look sexy. For Ashley’s eyes, I lined her top and bottom lids with mark No Place to Run Longwear Eyeliner in Jet Set. I focused on making the top line heavier and blended into the shadow, while blending the bottom line with the mark Flat Eyeliner Brush to smooth underneath her bottom lashes. The final touch was lining the inside rim of the eye. I love a full, feathery lash so I finished with a double coat of mark Scanda-Lash Hook Up Mascara in Blacklash.”

Lips
“To keep Ashley’s lips looking gorgeous and natural, I applied mark Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Bare Hug.”

Emmys Spotlight: Christina Hendricks

One of my favorite looks of last night goes to the very voluptuous Christina Hendricks. She looked flawless, from the hair to the makeup to the bust line :)

Here are the deets on her makeup:

Celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali

Inspiration:
Mia Farrow’s Daisy Buchanan from “The Great Gatsby”

Face:
Vanessa prepped the skin with LancĂ´me’s La Base Pro. To perfect Christina’s already luminous skin, Vanessa used LancĂ´me’s new Teint Miracle Lit-From-Within Makeup. “It has an amazing transparent quality that leaves the skin looking flawless and luminous without being shiny,” said Vanessa. “I applied it with a brush and then blended with my fingers.” Blending with her fingers heated up the foundation a bit, allowing for a seamless finish. Vanessa followed with Effacernes Concealer under the eyes, her “all time favorite concealer.”

Cheeks:
For a fresh pop of color I used LancĂ´me’s Blush Subtil Shimmer in Pink Pool on the apples of her cheeks. Dabs of Giorgio Armani Beauty’s Fluid Sheer #2 highlighted Christina’s cheekbones.

Eyes
The eye shadow was mix of YSL’s Ombre Solo Eyeshadow in Cashmere Brown and Midnight Black. “I applied these all over her lid, under the bottom lashes and blended it out past her natural lash line to softly elongate the eye,” reported Vanessa.

Eye Liner:
To define and elongate the lash line, Vanessa lined the eyes with LancĂ´me’s Le Crayon KhĂ´l in Black. “I used a touch of liner under her bottom lashes but smudged it for a softer look,” said Vanessa.  For added depth, Vanessa used Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner in Noir at the very base of Christina’s lashes.

Mascara:
Several generous coats of Lancôme Définicils Waterproof Mascara in Black were used on the top and bottom lashes.

Lips:
Christina’s lips were a mix of LancĂ´me lip colors for an effect that Vanessa described as “red with a little dash of pink.” A sheer coat of Color Design Matte Lipstick in Corset was topped by La Laque Fever Lipshine in Cyber Coral.

EMMYS 2010

Award Season 2010 has officially begun! The Emmys saw it's fair share of losers... and a couple of lucky winners. We, here at Beauty Banter, want to know who wins in the category RED CARPET FACE?

Here are some of the good -- and not so good -- faces of Emmy 2010:

Anna Paquin - I'm not a fan of this look. The hair is too coiffed, the makeup too drastic for Anna's cute face. She looks great when she does "fresh and young," she should keep it that way. It all seemed a bit overdone and old-fashioned.

Christina Hendricks - She looks fab! Those boobs, I mean, curls are so oversized! I do love this makeup, the sultry eye is that of a blue-grey which goes great with the dress.

Claire Danes – The golden smokey eye and light lip look stunning (and very summer appropriate) on Claire. She played it safe and simple but I like it. California starlet works for her. She's tres bronzed here, too. Hmm, fake and bake or vacation?

Eva Longoria-Parker - I think that she could have done more. Again, hair is too coiffed for my liking, it's the Emmys woman, not prom! And makeup is as she always wears - dark eyes, nude lip. Nothing stands out as OMG and she's a hot broad.

Heidi Klum - Okay, she's a supermodel and, yes, my expectations may be a bit higher than the average folk, but Heidi, what have you done to yourself? So much makeup, so much hairspray! Not enough easy chic. And those lips look scary transluscent, like she's on the verge of frost bite.

January Jones – I heard one commentator say that her hair looked like she just rolled out of bed. Um, hello, beach-chic bead head is so in and it’s still summer people. While I do think she could have tried a tad bit harder, I don’t think January was going for Hollywood glam girl look. And P.S. I love the long bob (lob) haircut!

Jewel – WOW red lips! Jewel looks like the consummate starlet. This is how award show red carpet is done. I don't even mind the updo! Flawless. Love it.

Kim Kardashian – Makeup is always pitch perfect. Lots of it but the drama suits her. Hair was up and back. I like Kim with her locks down, but that’s just a personal preference. This is definitely more ethereal, which is the look I think she was going for.

Lea Michele – Bangs are big this season and Lea is showing hers off. The hair was very age appropriate and the makeup was in-trend (grey shadows are making a statement!). Loving the nude lips with the smokey liner.

Rose Byrne - I love me some Rose Byrne but girl looks like she stuck her finger in an eletrical socket. What is up with that hair? Hideous! The makeup is decent but I can't really focus on anything but that nest of hair.

Sofia Vergara – She’s like a giant bottle of sex. Voluptuous lips, hair, cheekbones and …. yes, that too. Makeup and hair were ultra sexy, not necessarily award season style, but hot none-the-less.

GIRL CRUSH: Penelope Cruz at the Oscars

She's always beautiful, but Sunday night Penelope looked stunning. From her skin color (impeccably bronzed) to her chignon, the face -- and hair -- were flawless.

Here are the deets:

HAIR

Inspiration: “We chose a very easy, elegant bun because with this look, it was all about the dress,” says iconic hairstylist Oribe. “All of the elements were already there, from a beautiful movie star to a beautiful dress, so we wanted to go with less is more and keep the hair simple and chic.”

Get the hair:

1. Blow dry hair so it’s dry but don’t worry about making it too perfect.
2. Use a 1 ½ inch curling iron to curl the entire head.
3. Brush out the curls well and spray Imperméable or an anti-humidity spray to set the style and prevent frizz.
4. Pull hair in a knot and separate the knot to balance the head.
5. Pull out small tendrils around the face and neck to soften the look.

BROWS

"Anastasia Soare shaped Penelope’s brows in a high full arch, making her arches bold and defined. Penelope has big, beautiful eyes that can support a high arch."

I'm loving her loads of lashes. Very glamorous. Try Make Up For Ever's Smoky Lash Mascara to match the volume and curl.

OSCARS 2010: Hits and Misses

The road to Oscar was a long one, full of coiffed updo's and ruby red lips but the night has finally come and gone. And while WOMEN definitely kicked ass -- YAY to Kathryn Bigelow for her history-making best director win -- on and off of the red carpet, we here at Beauty Banter are really only concerned with who gave best face.

So, here are Oscar, 2010 beauty hits and misses:

Cameron Diaz - Finally a glam night for the actress. While I'm still on the fence as to whether she's channeling Old Hollywood Starlet or Texan Beauty Queen, I will say this: the tresses tended to with a hint of curl definitely make for a more glamorous look. And Cam can never go wrong with red lips. I say she's done well.

Carey Mulligan - It's like a mini Mia Farrow in the making. I love this cut and color on her and the makeup is fresh while still maintaining her youth. Adorabley chic... tres refreshing!

Charlize Theron - She's SO pretty I wanted the WOW factor but instead I got left with the "WHOA what's up with the boob petals" situation. While this isn't a site that trashes the duds, I just can't look away from the bust area and, quite frankly, that effects the face. On a makeup note, Charlize's lip color totally clashes with the violet dress. Shame.

Demi Moore - The side bouffant's a killer (as in bad) and her face looks frozen (botox?). Yes, she looks great for her age but I'm starting to wonder how much of her age is medically injected. Hmmm. On a brighter note, her skin color is gorgeously bronzed.

Jennifer Lopez - This is one of my favorite looks of the night - JLo knows how to do glam justice. The smokey, sultry pewter eyes rock and the signature nude lip is magnificent. Her skin color is always the right shade of bronze, never too orange or fake looking, and that hair color is like a delicious caramel treat. Obsession.

Kate Winslet - Her hair is the color of spun gold, her makeup, impeccable. Nobody does the exagerrated side part and Old Hollywood starlet curls quite like Kate (notice the contraasting dark brow -- gorge!). I think she looks flawless.

Rachel McAdams - I prefer her with brown hair and red lips but I wasn't totally hating on this look. I definitely like the makeup color palette (pinks and pale blue tones) but can somebody please give this girl a tan? She's so pale, she's almost see-through.

Sandra Bullock - Winner on stage, winner on the red carpet. Love that she kept her hair down, natural but still elegant with the exaggerated side part. My only qualm is the color of red used on her lips. I would have gone for something more burgandy and moody, this here is a tad too pink and bright.

Sarah Jessica Parker - While the dark eyes are definitely smoking (in a good way), it may be a tad too much makeup for SJP. And that hair, oh please, someone give her a serum to calm the flyaways! And too much going on with that bun. It isn't a race, woman, one chignon is fine.

Zoe Saldana - I feel like she constantly gives off that prom vibe - makeup is pretty, hair is coiffed but nothing's AMAZING. And she's so hot, I'm looking for some fierceness. P.S. What was she thinking with that dress? It was like a pinata hanging from the bottom.

Anna Kendrick's Eco Oscar Night Look

Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Up in the Air, Twilight star Anna Hendrick’s red carpet look was fabulous and totally eco, too! Wearing a gorgeous ballet slipper pink off-the-shoulder Elie Saab gown, her hair and makeup were as ethereal as her dress.

Celeb makeup artist Sara Glick wanted to give Anna’s porcelain skin a soft, natural glow. She used Arcona's Magic White Ice before applying makeup. "Anna has beautiful skin and doesn't need much to make it glow. I prepped her skin with a light, all natural moisturizer to help it stay hydrated throughout the night."

"For a natural flush, I accented Anna's cheek bones with a coral shade." Her pick? tarte’s natural cheek stain in eco-cheek. For lips, a base of tarte's LipSurgence natural lip stain in charmed was applied and then finished off with tarte’s double-ended natural lipglosses in jake & samantha (the samantha side is a pale, cotton candy pink with lots of shine). Perfect choice considering the Jake and Samantha are named for John Hughes film Sixteen Candles (did you love that tribute?).

Sara finished the look “with a light spritz of lavender mist for added hydration and an extra dose of calming with aromatherapy" from Arcona’s Lavendar Hydrasol spray. Using a light finishing spray really helps set any makeup but lavender is also great for calming nerves which I am sure came as an added bonus last night.

Thanks to Arcona and tarte for creating green beauty that’s pretty in pink! Hope you enjoyed the show! xo alex.

Road to the Oscars: Nutrition

While you may not be attending the Academy Awards, that doesn't mean you don't have the desire to look Oscar-worthy, be it for a birthday, office party or date!

Oz Garcia, nutritionist to stars like Hilary Swank, Kim Cattrall, Wynona Ryder and Heidi Klum, dishes on how to get -- and keep -- that red carpet body.

Follow these simple steps to look and feel your best for a big day, with a sample menu and foods to snack on:

Night before:

7pm- Get a massage to reduce bloat, tone muscles and help relax the body. Massage reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, while boosting the feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine. This will also help lull you to slumber.

11pm- Go to sleep- you need to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night to recharge your brain and reset your internal metabolic clock.

Day of:

7am- Wake up and go for a 40 minute jog or brisk walk OUTSIDE- you need the sunlight for Vitamin D so you can release dopamine into your system- an instant energy boost with lasting effects, it motivates you to have a healthy day

8am- Have Greek yogurt with berries and prepare yourself a giant pitcher of water with lemon (to flush out extra bloat) that you will have on hand all morning

9am- The glam squad arrives, discuss the look for the day over green tea

11am- Before makeup is done, have a salad with 4oz of lean protein and another cup of green tea

1pm- The dress is about to go on, grab a fistful of almonds to stave off hunger for the next 4 hours

2:30pm- Indulge in a square of dark chocolate in the limo- packed with anti-oxidants, this treat helps you to not feel deprived going into the big event. Now you won’t be tempted by the first thing you see!

Diet:
You have to be militant about cutting out ALL wheat products (not carbs, but wheat.) This will help speed up your metabolism, bring down bloat and increase energy. It’s the quickest and easiest way to get lean.

Micro-meals:
Instead of having a few large meals throughout the day, eat six small meals. Breaking your diet down into small meals will help regulate blood sugar and keep you from feeling too hungry at any point during the day

Sample Menu:
1. Greek yogurt with berries
2. Hard-boiled egg or some nuts (almonds)
3. Large salad with 4 oz of lean animal protein (fish, chicken or turkey)
4. High protein whey shake
5. Dinner with lots of vegetables sautéed in olive oil with 4 oz of fish
6. Dark chocolate 70% to 80% pure coco

Beverages:

Lots of water
Four cups of green tea daily
A glass of wine at night

Breaking down the foods:

Greek Yogurt:
1. It’s great for digestion
2. Calcium, protein and vitamin B2
3. Great for your immune system

Berries:
1. Antioxidants- makes your skin look great
2. Good sugars- power your body and brain

Eggs:
1. Protein/ Amino Acids (the building blocks of muscle)
2. Choline- helps regulate the brain, nervous system and cardiovascular system
3. Vitamin D
4. Sulphur- hair, nails and eyes

Lean proteins:
1. Turkey
2. Tuna
3. Salmon
4. Chicken breast
5. Beans
6. Some cheeses

Whey Protein:
1. Builds muscle
2. Boosts immune function
3. Appetite suppressant

Dark Chocolate:
1. Excellent antioxidant
2. Anti-inflammatory

Almonds:
1. Vitamin E and contains more calcium than any other nut
2. Almonds are also incredible in the fact they help you feel fuller longer, which can be a huge aid in any weight loss plan at any time of day

A Look Back: Award Season 2010

The Oscars are less than a week away which will wrap up award season 2010. A few months ago, I asked the ever talented Joanna Schlip, Physicians Formula celebrity makeup artist, for the top 5 red carpet color trends we could expect to see this season, and here's what she had to say:

1) Faye Dunaway – very finished brow, nude lip, glowy cheek, big lashes

2) Neutral face with very powerful colored lip – anything from red to fuchsia (will go the full gamut)

3) Healthy glowy skin all over the body – skin will be glowing on arms and legs

4) Everyone will be sporting lashes very flirty and sexy lashes

5) Blushes will be more of deeper peaches, corals and pinks – not so vibrant, but toned down and muted with a matte t-zone – only certain areas will be highlighted, such as the cheekbone, brow bone or bridge of nose.

Joanna Schlip has painted the faces of celebrities including Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria, Scarlett Johansson, Ellen Pompeo, Laura Linney, Hilary Duff, Sheryl Crow and Jessica Simpson. She is also author of Glamour Gurlz: The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide to Great Make-up and Gurl Smarts.

Was Joanna right? Were these the trends we saw this award season? And what do you think we'll see come Sunday night?

Discuss below!

Grammys 2010: Who Gave Best Face

We're in the thick of it now: Golden Globes, SAG, now Grammys.... award season is well underway. While other sites care about the music, and still others will comment on the wardrobe, we here at Beauty Banter simply care about the faces -- and manes -- that strut down that red carpet.

So, for 2010, here are our hits and misses for best face (in alphabetical order):

Beyonce - Girl is glittering and it looks gorge! I love the straight, lomg hair, very glam, parted on the side, with the glittering pieces interspersed throughout. And yes, I am aware that the hair is fake but I don't really care. Also loving the shimmering lower liner. Tres fab. Brows are about a shade too dark for my taste.

Fergie - So happy she wore her hair down with a bounce and the blue is a hot color on her - goes great with the deep chestnut hued hair. BTW, this is by far the best brown I've seen on Fergie. I'm so happy I can't even focus on the face (although my quick glance seems to show nothing out of the ordinary).

Heidi Klum - If this Victoria's Secret Angel didn't rock the red carpet, something would be amiss. But she really worked it out last night. That eye makeuop is so gorge and I'm really feeling the mauve lippy. The hair looks like she walked straight off the beach -- super simple but still beautiful and natural -- blonde highlights and all. Perfection. Hotness. Loves it. Seal is one lucky lad.

Jeniffer Hudson - YOU GO GIRL! Looking retro with bangs, lashes and fuchsia lips, J.Hud killed it! This is how you make an everyday pony look glam. And the eyes are insanely sexy. I'm so proud of the American Idol alum.

Jennifer Lopez - The girl is making a comeback! Her caramel haircolor looks fantastic, the length is perfect, the volume, enviable. Eye makeup is definitely a lot, bordering on overly sultry but I'm all for a dark eye and nude lip and nobidy quite does it like J.Lo.

Katy Perry - She looks aaaight, nothing I'm wowed over save for the bhindi (although not quite sure the significance of it with said look). Everything from hair to makeup is just a little blah especially for the Grammys, especially with this glamorous crew.

Lady Gaga - The dress is like a Christmas ornament on crack but we're not here to talk about the duds. As far as the face goes, sans that hideous black, "I just got stepped on by your tennis shoe" propaganda look, she actually seems to resemble a decent female. Hair is somewhat normal, makeup is as pretty as pretty can be in the land of Gaga. I'm not hating on it (accept the piss yellow hair color - that is a travesty).

Nicole Kidman - Are those 2 earmuffs on the side of her head or is the Princess Leia look the hot new trend? I mean, hids 'do. And she looks too stiff to be sitting in the company of the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce. Sorry, Nic, you've gotta step up your game when trolling to the Grammys.

Rihanna - Fiercest eyes of the evening. It looks like she's got spiders crawling from her lashes! And that pompadour is sickkkkk. She looks amazingly chic and glamorous and very pop rock and roll. My only quelm: the tone of the hair is a bit brassy, she could add hint of sunkissed highlights to even out the overall color.

Taylor Swift - She looks like a porcelain doll. Seriously, not a curl out of place or a lash not coated with mascara. She's a pretty girl, looks sweet, not a lot to go off of, she doesn't take many chances. I will say that I enjoyed her hair long and down as she wore it later in the evening as opposed to this prom 'do. But overall, I'm underwhelmed at the look while overwhelmed by her wins!

Who do YOU think gave best face?
