Lorac Hot Off The Red Carpet Collection

My inspiration for this post is all of the gilded goddesses from Monday night's Met Ball (Michelle Williams and Lily Aldridge, specifically come to mind - click here for a recap on the trends from the big soiree).

Spring and gold go brilliantly together and Lorac has combined a fabulous collection of gold and bronze hues for your face, eyes and lips. The Hot Off The Red Carpet Collection is... well, just that: A look that is suitable for an A-list celeb to saunter down a red carpet.

There's no denying that metallics are major right now. While that just-stepped-off-a-beach glow is sure to get you noticed, the gilded look is also scoring massive points if applied on eyes AND lips (as seen on Michelle Williams at the Met Ball). It's a little bit Old Hollywood glamour girl and a little bit contemporary rock goddess. That's the thing about makeup - trendy is simply an extension of something classic.

Here's what you get in the box of goodies:

2 exclusive color-coordinated, mineral-infused, shimmering Baked Eye Shadow Duos
An excluisve, cult-classic TANtalizer Baked Bronzer
A Multiplex 3D Lip Gloss in 3D
A Gold Blingy Bag that can double as your evening clutch

Owner and creator of Lorac, Carol Shaw, has worked with many A-list celebs including Nicole Kidman, Allison Hannigan and Rachel Bilson... she's quite the authority when it comes to red carpet beauty.

PRICE TAG: $36.00 ($140.00 value!) It's a steal!!! LIMITED EDITION

Trend Alert: Spring Cut + Color

It's always great to get a pro's advice on what's hot each season. And there's no one quite like Joico Celeb Stylist George Papanikolas, and my personal favorite colorist when I am on the West Coast. He works with celebs like Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus and is the go-to for young Hollywood.

George dishes on some trends we are bound to see this season. From hair color to cut, here's what to expect -- and if you have yet to make up your mind on a new look, here's some inspiration.

"It's going to be all about effortless cool this spring.  Hair with tons of texture but not perfect spiral curls.  It will be a more exaggerated wave and will be  more reminiscent of a surfer girl.

Last season Ombre was the hot look, but for this season that look is too contrived.  Instead, the color will also be effortless and cool, with beach inspired highlights.  Everyone will be asking for balayage highlights that are hand-painted.  There will still be a rooty look, but not as exaggerated as it was in the past.  Instead roots will be mixed with gold, honey strands gradually getting lighter to baby blonde at the ends.  For brunettes it will be a similar effect with caramels and cinnamon tones.

For haircuts, the most asked for haircut is a long bob with bangs.  The cut is very 70s inspired, but takes a modern approach with the shorter length.  The texture stays with the effortless cool with exaggerated waves and roughed up texture.

We've also seen a resurgence of the pixie.  The look is huge on the red carpet, and should be paired with a bold hue to make it for this season.  White blonde, or a fiery red make this look pop."

Spring CLEANing

Hello, Beauty Banterers - I’ve missed you! Seems just yesterday I was talking about gifts for the holidays and now it’s Spring. Really? (Well, it’s Spring here on the West Coast – those in the East may beg to differ.)

With the changing of the seasons, I find my skincare, hair care, and makeup all change in different ways. As does my perfume.

Although I have one go-to scent I wear year-round, I like to mix it up a bit from time to time. Come warmer months, the spicier, headier fragrances that work when it’s chilly make me feel claustrophobic. I want something lighter, crisper, and that will tolerate triple digit weather when it arrives (and it will soon enough, ugh).

When the fabulous people at CLEAN told me about the the new additions to their collection, I was thrilled to try them out. The company began almost a decade ago with the quest to create a scent that was simple and, well, clean – I think of it as the simplicity of something like Dove soap only in perfume form.

At the time, I remember being at a party and two different people had just discovered this new, go-with-everything scent. But instead of being a trend that faded, it’s become something of a classic and the CLEAN line has expanded to dry shampoos, lotions, men’s fragrances, and even hand sanitizer.

I am loving the new CLEAN Summer Escape Eau de Parfum ($49). This limited edition scent blends notes of citrus and bergamot with lily, cotton blossoms and coconut water. It’s subtle, which I find nice. I like to wear perfume, not have it wearing me. Especially in warmer months. And the mix of flowers, citrus, and bit of spice work well together.

They also shared the new CLEAN Cotton T-Shirt ($38/$69), an Eau de Parfum that mixes musk, amber, freesia and cotton flower to create a scent that’s fresh and crisp and, again, subtle. The musky tones are there to give you “the feel of stealing and wearing your boyfriend’s tee” but it’s still very light and femme. Personally, I’d love to see them release a linen spray in this one.

You can find the entire CLEAN collection at Sephora (online and in stores), Ulta, and drugstore.com.  xo a.

Spring Trends With Tina Turnbow

They say that Spring is right around the corner, though I am remiss to believe them. It's still freezing cold according to my inner thermostat.

None-the-less, one of my favorite celebrity makeup artists, Tina Turnbow (clients include Claire Danes, Mary Louise Parker, Ivanka Trump, Amanda Peet, and Rachel Weisz), is forecasting on Spring color trends... and we're digging the predictions!

Bold Cheeks: Concentrate pinks on the apples for a fever-flushed look. Example: Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm in Blushed and Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Amused
Romantic Neutrals: Add amorous shades of pink, nude, and beige. Example: Tarte Neutral Eyes Palette and Josie Maran Blush Stick in Rosey

Orange Lips: Find the shade that suits you- from pale coral to burnt red. Example: Cover Girl Lip Perfection in Hot Flame and Nars Lipsick in Heat Wave

Elegant Pastels: Create an ethereal look with luminous, dreamy shades. Example: For lips, Cover Girl Naturluxe Gloss Balm in Coral, Cargo Plant Love Green Glamour Kit and Korres soft liner pencil in Light Blue

Vivid Brights: Give lips, lids, cheeks, and nails a kick of traffic-stopping color. Example: Cargo Blush in Amalfi and Laguna and Tarte Aquagel Eyeliner in Teal

Luminous Golds: Add radiance, shimmer, and sheen for a subtly sexy allure. Example: Josie Maran Argan Illuminator, Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips, Organic Wear in bronzer/ginger duo, Cargo Safari Kit.

RIMMEL SPRING 2010

Rimmel is one of my favorite drugstore cosmetics lines. I've been obsessed even before they sold in the states, when Kate Moss was the spokesmodel and you could only buy the goods in Europe.
While the products are now available stateside, the brand doesn't get the recognition I believe that it deserves. Their run-of-the-mill eye pencil is one of my must-haves.

Well, ladies, here's a sneak peak at Rimmel's Spring 2010 collection...

THINK: Vibrant, saturated color for eyes, lips and cheeks.

WHAT IT IS : A burst of color to brighten up spring. This spring, the London look is all about color. From glamorously glimmering eyes to radiant cheeks and luminous lips, every feature is lit up with lush color this season. Highlight your best asset with a pop of color, or go bold with a strong eye and brilliant pout. Rimmel London has the high-impact shades you crave this season for eyes, lips and cheeks.

GLAM’EYES MONO EYE SHADOW ($3.49)
This soft, silky formula delivers bold, brilliant and glamorous eyes with even, smooth, crease-proof application and high color impact.  Lavishly pigmented for longwearing, stay true color, the pressed powders are embossed with Rimmel London’s signature crown and housed in a glamorous black compact.
Available Shades: Glam Ice, Spicy Bronze, Posh Peacock, Night Jewel, Royal Violet, Celestial Sapphire

 ROYAL GLOSS ($4.99)
This deliciously wet-looking sheer gloss is enriched with Vitamins A, C and E as well as Royal Jelly. In 10 irresistible juicy, pearly shades, the great-tasting, non-sticky gloss is enhanced with the sweet scents of bubble gum, chocolate and peach. A glide-on applicator makes this great-tasting gloss extra easy to apply.
Available Shades: Berry Crush, Bubble Blush, Candy Rush, Cookie, Delicious, Gourmet, Peach Crush, Pink Taffy, Sweet Lust, Twinkle Pink

LASTING FINISH BLENDABLE BLUSH ($4.99)
This soft-textured pressed powder blush delivers long-lasting, blendable, smudge-resistant color. With a natural hair contouring brush, the blush offers smooth, even, sheer coverage for a healthy natural glow.
Available Shades: Berry, Pink Rose, Pink Sorbet, Santa Rose

EYEFUL EYE GLISTENER ($7.20)
This glistening wet-look pencil can be used as a shadow or a liner, glossing lids with vibrant yet transparent color that instantly illuminates eyes.
Available Shades: Flaunt, Girls Only, Stand Out, Straight Laced, Talk To Me

I can't wait to get my hands on the eyeful eye glistener (although I'm not too keen on the lime green hue... but I assume they have a golden shade that will fit right into my summer goddess  look).

Any products that you are dying to try?

Inspired By: Dangerous Beauty

One of my favorite movies -- amazing cast and costumes -- and great inspiration for spring/ summer beauty: Dangerous Beauty, the film about Venetian Courtesans.

The lead actress, Catherine McCormick plays Courtesan and Poetess, Vanessa Franco. She exhibits grace, style and a flair for perfectly pastel makeup.

FAVORITES: Lippies For Spring

Discovering a new lippy is almost as exciting as meeting a new man: the intrigue and anticipation... will it be up for the ultimate challenge --- A kiss?

Here are my newest favorite lippies for Spring:

Senna Lip Lacquer in Boudoir - Looks can be deceiving. This gloss appears bubble gum pink in the container but goes on like a sheer pink. Perfect to layer with a matte lipstick. Gives off high shine, just the way I like it.

Jouer Lip Gloss in Riviera - A pungent gloss that goes on opaque with a hint of red. Not too shiny or too colorful, it's just enough to make your lips look naturally flushed. I wear it alone, during the day, almost like a stain with a bit of shine.

Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Pearl #157 - A salmon-seashell hue that reminds me of Farrah Fawcett lips circa Charlie's Angels. It's shimmery with a high shine, just the way my lips like it. Fantastic paired with a smokey eye.

Sue Devitt Lip Intensifier Pencil in Malaita - I suppose you can use this solely as a lip pencil, but the thing is so big (dirty minds!) it's perfect as a matte lip color. The hue is great for spring - a mauve pink. And it doesn't kiss off!

Dior Addict Crystal Gloss - I am so obsessed with my new find, I've even worn it to bed! It's super glossy with the palest translucent pink hue, almost like natural flushed Barbie lips. Amazing alone or layered for an additional dash of shine.

What are YOUR favorite spring lippies?

Flash Forward: Flash Color Palette

I've been on the hunt for spring makeup colors -- and I've come up with some mighty fine finds.

My first find is a truly genius palette by the master minds over at Make Up For Ever: Flash Color Palette 2009 Collector's Edition. ($95.00, $216.00 value).

It's one palette filled with 12 cream colors ranging from gold to white to black and everything in between. Great for eyes, lips and face these colors blend together to create an array of individualized hues just for you. I can't stop playing with my palette. I've tried gold eyes, pink lips, coral blush and there is so much more fun to be had.

Here is a look I created using the palette. Let's call it the pink pout:

ON EYES:
Gold on the lid, followed by MUFE Aqua Cream Waterproof Cream Color in Shade 15 (available in June) for the crease (not part of the palette). I then lined my upper lid with the black flash color using a thin liner brush. I finished the look by applying the white color to my brow bone and inner corner of my eyes.

ON CHEEKS: I mixed a dot of fuchsia with coral and applied like a cream blush.

ON LIPS: I took the same mixture as my cheeks but used more coral to bland out the color. I then applied Dior Addict Crystal Gloss (new product; Sephora exclusive) on top for brilliant shine.

I'm going to try a more bold, daring and colorful look this week and will post some pics.

Do you have the palette?

Spring Forward: Makeup Trend Forecasting

As the weather gets a tad warmer, I can't help but hope (pray) that Spring is right around the corner. Move over puffy jackets and fur boots, it's time to reintroduce wedges and dresses to the mix.

On the makeup front, Christopher Drummond, creator of the all-natural, vegan, mineral makeup line Christopher Drummond Beauty (we heart a good organic line!) predicts Spring 2010 makeup is all about beautiful but muted colors, coral lips, and the bottom eyelid.

Here are Christopher’s trend predictions for Spring 2010:

Color: Colors such as a slightly shimmery baby blue, a barely there soft pink, and a softly noticeable tangerine color are going to be the “go to” colors for spring/summer. These colors work on everyone and bring more focus to the skin, cheekbones and lips.

Lips: Coral, whether bright or muted, is the new classic that will be explored starting this spring/summer and throughout 2010. Also, anyone can wear coral because it is fresh and youthful looking and rich yet subtle at the same time.

Eyes: Spring/Summer 2010 will be all about the bottom lid.

  • Adding a light amount of colored liner on the bottom lid, which looks fresh and modern and is a way to add color to the eyes without going overboard. (Tip: this color should not match the top lid).
  • Another eye trend is no makeup at all on the bottom. A nice thick liner with rich mascara and a colored shadow on top paired with a bare bottom lash line will open the eyes up and look youthful and fresh.

Spring Ahead: Hair Trends From Rodney Cutler

For the spring season, designers crafted fresh and colorful collections. “From bouncy curls to edgy up-dos, we wanted to compliment the fun aesthetic that designers unveiled on the runways, giving hair its own personality” says Rodney Cutler.

Here, the talented Cutler team shares the trends from the hottest designer shows, including Rebecca Taylor, Luca Luca, Carlos Miele, Tadashi Shoji and Toni Maticevski.

Fresh and Young as seen at Rebecca Taylor

“I wanted to create a style that was fresh and young like the clothes, but simple enough so as not to overpower the designs,” says Dai Michishita, Cutler/Redken’s lead hairstylist for the show.

Organic, Effortless Curls as seen at Luca Luca

“To celebrate the ‘springy movement’ I gave the models natural, bouncy curls,” stated Teddy Charles of Cutler/Redken, lead stylist for the show.

Soft, Bouncy Blow-Out as seen at Carlos Miele

“The clothes were so exquisite that I wanted the hair to be very natural,” says Rodney Cutler, the lead stylist for the show. “We created slight movement on the ends of the hair, so it bounced as the models sashayed down the runway.”

Effortless Glamour as seen at Tadashi Shoji

“To evoke the glamorous detail seen in Tadashi Shoji’s rich and wearable collection, I wanted to recreate an up-do commonly seen on the red carpet – soft, effortless and stylish,” says lead stylist Rodney Cutler.

Elegant and Edgy as seen at Toni Maticevski

“To play up the feel of the designs, I wanted to do a modern, high- fashion interpretation of the classic french twist,” says Rodney Cutler.

Shu Uemura Pink Collection

You know it's Spring when pink becomes a focal color for the face...

This month, Shu Uemura launches their Rouge Unlimited Pink Collection, a series of 9 lipsticks and 5 glosses made with a Pink Hybrid Pigment, one of the purest pink pigments ever discovered and and patented by the cult Japanese beauty company.

A word (or several...) from the company:

"The Pink Hybrid Pigment, which was discovered by Shu Uemura laboratories, is made up of a fusion between a mineral core and an organic shell, which produces particles that are perfectly round and regular in shape. This consistency is what makes the hues of the lipstick so bright and pure. This is what creates the new and unique hues of pink seen in the collection with shades that range from never before seen light, yellowish, dark and bluish pinks."

Here are the colors in the different spectrums (click image to enlarge):

PRICE TAG: Lipstick - $23.00 / Gloss - $22.00
