Get The Look: Keri Russell

The incredible Tina Turnbow has brought eco-conscious beauty to the world of celeb styling. Vera Farmiga, Claire Danes and Amanda Peet are fans, as are we at Beauty Banter. Tina recently collaborated with tarte to create the new Flower Child Collection. Last Thursday, Keri Russell was aglow at the premiere of her latest film, Leaves of Grass, thanks to Tina’s makeup magic. Here’s how Tina prepared Keri for the big night.

Before makeup, Tina used the antioxidant packed multitasker The Solution by Envision Beauty ($79) to moisturize Keri’s skin. Then, “for a healthy complexion, I used a tinted moisturizer and created a peachy-pink cheek."

Tina first applied tarte's smooth operator oil-free tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 ($36) over Keri’s whole face and spot treated with tarte's the eraser 4-in-1 natural concealer ($21).
She dusted tarte's provocateur powder pressed mineral powder with SPF 8 ($30) to set the look and used a combo of tarte’s natural cheekstains ($30) in tipsy and dollface on the apples of Keri’s cheeks (I happen to love both these stains and layer them for a natural, healthy pinch of color).

For Keri’s eyes, Tina “wanted a soft, smoky charcoal eye with voluminous lashes." Using her signature flower child eyeshadow palette ($44), she brushed on matte buttercup and shimmering peach in the crease of the eye and shimmering gray periwinkle on her lids. Tina then lined her eyes with tarte's emphasEYES™ natural high definition inner rim eye pencil in charcoal ($18) and added a coat of tarte's bottoms up ($16) on lower lashes.

Tina finished the look, with “a nude lip with a hint of pink sheen,” by combining applying the tarte's pinky nude double-ended lipliner in dizzy blonde ($19) all over Keri’s lip and topping it with a shiny coat of tarte's vitamin infused by BORBA lipgloss in om ($21).

The end result is quintessential Turnbow chic: made-up without trying too hard. Unfussy glamour that looks as fabulous for a Hollywood premiere as your own day-to-day life. Award Season is well underway (yay!) and the year's trends are coming out in droves.

My current favorite is the pin curl as seen at the SAG Awards on Saturday night and the Golden Globe Awards last week.

Celebrity stylist Adir Abergel for Frederic Fekkai dishes on how to get the pin curl 'do from Red Carpet to Real Life:

Adir Abergel starts by parting the hair on an angle and spraying FEKKAI COIFF™ BOUFFANT LIFTING & TEXTURIZING SPRAY GEL to the roots to create body and shine. Then blow-dry sections of the hair with a brush and then using a bobby pin and pinning the hair in the shape of a curl. Lightly spray FEKKAI COIFF™ Sheer Hold Hairspray over the pinned curls. After letting the hair set in the curls for a couple of minutes he loosely takes them out and uses a medium curling iron and small barrel curling iron to accentuate the curl. Celebrity makeup artist Mary Burton created the glamorous look for Angelina Jolie at the Cannes Film Festival. To define Angelina’s lashes Mary used two different mascaras, Lancôme Hypnôse in Black and Lancôme Ôscillation in Black and applied a few coats of both to add volume and length. Mary used Lancôme Color Design Lipstick in Candy Apple to create her voluptuous red pout.

Red For Spring

This pic is from the CHANEL Tribeca Film Festival Dinner Party in NYC -- a couple of weeks ago, I know, but I am still loving it as the consummate Spring face.

Alexis Bledel gives great spring face with minimal makeup. Mascara, glowing skin and a red pout. Simple. Sexy. Perfection.

I'm a major sucker (no pun intended) for a clean face and red lip... a perfect night-out look for Spring.

Sarah's Picks: I've been using MAC's Russian Red forever -- it's my go-to, never fail red/ orange hue. I also love Nars' Jungle Red lip liner. I apply this to my entire lip then finish with a wash of clear gloss (usually Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream). The lip liner-as-lipstick trick helps to keep lips red ALL night. For a deeper berry/ red I am obsessed with the limited-edition Lancome Peter Som P.S. Kiss. Such an incredible color.

Get The Look: Dita Von Teese in H&M Campaign

The current queen of pin-up girls Dita Von Teese flaunts her stuff for the new H&M ad campaign, Designers Against AIDS. Gregory Arlt, Director of Makeup Artistry for M.A.C Cosmetics, was on hand to create the classic Dita face. Here, he shares exclusively with Hollywood Life how to get the look.

Inspiration: "The look was “classic” Dita. This is a t-shirt that she designed to raise money for an AIDS organization, so we wanted Dita to be herself."

Colors: "Being that this was a black and white shot, I went a little stronger with her look to emphasize her lovely features. We love a classic pinup look, so when you look at the shot you see brows, lash line, and lips primarily. I used “Vanilla” shadow all over as a base, “Copperplate” shadow in the crease with “Print” shadow in the deeper crease to create depth, and “BlackTrack” Fluidline eye liner to achieve her classic cat eye. I finished off the eyes with “# 2” false lashes. For the lips I went deeper so that they would appear red in black and white. “Burgundy” lip liner was used with “Viva Glam 1” lipstick mixed with “Diva” lipstick."

Products Used: "Dita’s skin is FLAWLESS, so I used a small amount of M•A•C Sculpting Foundation in “NW15” with Mineralized Skin Finish Natural Powder in “Light”. On her eyelids, I used “Dazzlelight” shadow to make them ‘pop’."

Technique: "It’s all about the brushes! For her foundation, I used a M•A•C #190 Foundation brush. For her shadow base and lids, I used a #252 brush followed by a #224 brush to create the deep crease using “Copperplate” shadow. Her lips need to look perfect, of course, so I recommend applying red lipstick with a #317 lip brush."

Apply FEKKAI MORE ALL DAY DENSITY STYLING WHIP and FEKKAI COIFF BOUFFANT LIFTING & TEXTURIZING SPRAY GEL to wet hair. Blow dry hair with FEKKAI COMB starting from the forehead to the crown of the neck so that it does not dry too straight. Braid all of the hair loosely and pin it with bobby pins to create shape and set style. Finish with FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY all over.

Look: natural waves


To start, I sprayed our David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and distributed evenly through the hair to create the volume, texture and lift I was looking for. Next, I used the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer on medium heat and medium air flow. I used my hands instead of a brush so I could create texture. To create her beachy waves I did some soft scrunching and twisting small strands around my fingers until dry. I finished this look with Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray for a lightweight touchable hold.

Look: a sexy and modern style without out being too over done


Use FEKKAI COIFF STRONG HOLD VOLUME MOUSSE on wet hair to create fullness and body. Blow dry using FEKKAI EXTRA LARGE ROUND BRUSH to make the hair very straight. Tease the hair and pull it all back into a tight pony tail. Secure with a rubber band. Then use a small amount FEKKAI MAGNIFIQUE ULTRA LIGHT FINISHING CREME all over and finish the look with FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY.

Look: super sleek, side chignon


Apply TRESemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème to towel-dried hair. Part hair to one side, and blow dry smooth with a bend in the ends. Pull hair all the way over to the side, and tie the ends into a low pony with a band. Wrap the pony and loop it as if you're going to knot it, so it forms a bun like shape. Secure with bobby pins, crisscrossing them as you pin. Spray TRESemmé TRES Two Ultra Fine Mist Hairspray all over to hold the style in place.Finish the look with TRESemmé No-Frizz Shine Spray to add shine and tame flyaways.

Look: modern ballerina bun


Start out by applying FEKKAI COIFF BOUFFANT LIFTING & TEXTURIZING SPRAY GEL at the roots making sure to create body and movement. Dry the hair with your hands allowing the natural texture to come through. Once dried, take a 1" curling iron, curling the hair away from the face. Finish by applying FEKKAI MAGNIFIQUE ULTRA LIGHT FINISHING CREME to create a relaxed separation in the hair. Pull the hair back into a ballerina bun just below the crown, making sure to leave texture around the face for a modern vibe. To finish the look spray hair with FEKKAI GLOSSING SHEER MIST and FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY.

Look: Old Hollywood starlet

To create this Sophia Loren inspired look, I used a large barrel curling iron by FHI Heat. First, I parted her hair to the side using the highest point of the eyebrow as my guide. Then I created 4 sections (top, sides and nape) for total control. Before curling each section, I sprayed Volcanic Ash Root Lift to each strand then clip each curl. This provided the volume and lift needed for any special event. Next, gently brush curls out using your fingers and allowing curls to fall into a natural pattern. To finish, I sprayed Mise en Plis Extra Hold Styling Spray that provides not only maximum hold but leaves hair with a brilliant shine.

One of the most beautiful supermodels of all time (and definitely the nicest), my dear friend Jessica Stam, scored a coveted ticket to the Met Ball on Monday night. The theme for the fete was "The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion" and boy did those gorgeous amazon's come out in droves.



Jessica embodied one of my favorite looks of the evening (and no, not just because she's my friend) in her asymmetrical Rodarte mini, stylish updo and feminine makeup. Check out those crystal blue eyes!

Get Celebrity Pearly Whites At Home!

Have you ever had teeth envy? Drew Barrymore's got great teeth. So, too, does Jeniffer Aniston. Actually, most celebs have perfectly whitened teeth (save for some of those Brits - Amy Winehouse...) and there's a reason!

White teeth are eye-stopping gorge (some may even say "blinding"). That's why all of the celebs go to great lengths to get their pearly whites the perfect shade of white. And probably why there are dozens of companies formulating pastes and whiteners with the promise of a brighter smile. Of course, you can also book it to your dentist for the thousand dollar treatments, but since it's a recession and I'm on a budget, I wanted to find a way to get my very own set of celebrity pearly whites for as little money as possible.

My dear friend, the beautiful and very beauty savvy, Kate Towne, boasted about one of her all time favorite beauty products: The Rembrant Whitening Touch Up Pen. "I can literally be walking into a meeting put it on in the elevator and by the time I get in the room my teeth are two shades whiter," says Kate. She also filled me in on a little celeb secret: before walking the red carpet, the Rembrant Whitening Stick is where it's at!

With this in mind, and award season swooning (and so many great smiles strutting the red carpet), I decided it was time to give my teeth the Rembrandt VIP treatment. I started with the Rembrandt Whitening Strips. They're strips filled with bleaching gunk that you comfortably fit on the bottom and top teeth. You use it once a day for 30 minutes for 7 days. After just three days, I noticed a difference. After five, days my teeth were a good shade whiter. After seven, my teeth were a bit sensitive but white as snow! And at $23.99 for the kit, it's pretty affordable.

In the mornings and before bed, I brushed with Rembrandt's Whitening Intense Stain Toothpaste with Fluoride. The mint flavor is easy to swallow and the paste is formulated with "micro-polishing particles and stain-fighting ingredients that clean deeply and whiten." This is a great in-between to boost the whiteness - after drinking coffee, red wine, smoking (ew/ ugh!), but I'd be lying if I said it really worked to bleach my teeth. The kit is definitely better suited for that task. $7.50

But I've got to agree with Kate, the Whitening Touch-Up Pen is GENIUS (and my favorite whitening product ever!). It's portable, can be used virtually anywhere and anytime for a bright white touch up. It instantly bleaches the teeth about a 1/2 a shade whiter and it has a pleasant taste, so it's not obtrusive. The pen is so fun to use, it's become quite addictive! This is the best $14.00 that I've ever spent on my teeth!

Teen Vogue February Cover - Get The Look!

Our favorite Gossip Girl, Blair Waldorf (a.k.a. Leighton Meester) graces the February cover of Teen Vogue Magazine. She looks clean and youthful, minimal makeup, natural, straight hair... It's all very Leighton and I want more Blair!


To recreate this look, try using a neutral blush (we like Smashbox's Blush Rush in Ecstacy) on the apples of your cheeks. Then sweep a very mellow brown on the lid of your eye and under your lower lashes (try MAC's Remotely Grey). Lashes need a quick coat of mascara (Cover Girl's Lash Blast is the current fave). For lips, a very au-natural glossy pink (Jouer's lip gloss in Mist - a shimmering baby pink - would look gorge). For eyebrows, Anastasia's brow gel (and if you have thin brows, try filling them in with some of her brow powder).

Simple, no fuss makeup!

P.S. The hair color is a too light - Leighton looks tres sexier with those raven locks she sports on GG!

5 Simple Steps to Beautifying For A Special Evening

Here are the 5 easy steps I took to get ready for my birthday soiree... you too, can simplify your "special evening" beauty routine to these 5 steps:

1. Pick a dress... Luckily, I have an amazing friend (Kimberly Stewart) with a fabulous closet who was kind enough to lend me her "haute" Herve Leger... I figured black is back (has it ever really gone out of style?) and always sophisticated. After all, I was going for "cocktail sexy" sans the super slutty. And the look of the evening: tres chic with a healthy does of glam!

2. Spray Tan... Actor Nick Spano opened the first solar-powered tanning salon, Sun Lounge, and let me tell you, it's fantastic! Sleek, chic, and green! I'm not a fake tan sort of gal, but before a big event, a little color is key. Of course, it's vital to find a GOOD spray tan, and by good I mean, absolutely zero orange. I stepped into the Versus Spa by Magic Tan and after 3 easy breezy steps (and only 4 minutes), I was transformed into a golden goddess! More on this incredible, innovative solar-powered tanning salon to come later in the week - so check back!

3. Nails... My friend, Sarah Jane, recommended a fabulous little nail shop hidden on the corner of Fairfax and 3rd Street - Lena's Nail Shop - it's clean, chic and all about the nails! Best part, $22.00 for hands and feet! (More to come about my fab experience with Lena in a later post... cooling sea salt foot scrub, need I say more?). Color of choice - black (obvi)!


4. Hair... Obviously my favorite hair maven, Jen Atkin of the Andy Lecompte Salon, tended to my tresses. It was ALL about the flat iron curls. Long, whispy, hippy-chic curls to accentuate the mood of the evening - tres chic!


P.S. When attending a special event or party, I always find it best to go with hair that you a) compliments your face AND outfit, and b) is indicative of you. Don't go for trendy unless you're certain the look suits your style. For me, flat-iron curls are my default do - they never seem to fail me!

5. Make-up... I opted for a smokey eye and a light lip. Simple, yet elegant. On a special evening, you never want to get overly creative with your look. Stick to what you know works well - again, stay away from trends (i.e. Fall's black lip....), you'll regret the photos, guaranteed!


Here's how I created my look:

• MAC Engaging Mineralize Eye Shadow as a base (I dusted the light side all over lid). I followed this with MAC's Ungaro Eye Shadow in Mineral. This color is primarily brown with a very light plum after-hue. It belnds amazingly with the bit of sparkle from Engaging. I used Mineral in the upper crease and just under the lower lash line.
• Next, I wanted a thin black line - not cat eyes, just lash line emphasis. I opted for Make Up For Ever's Waterproof Eyeliner in Black. It's a liquid and comes with a very thin bristled brush so creating an even, thin line can be a bit of a feet - but a steady hand does the trick!
• For mascara, I chose my new fave - Cover Girl Lash Blast (read my rave review HERE). Enough said.

• For face I primed with Smashbox Photo Finish Light (oil-free!... the best thing to happen to primer since the original Photo Finish), then continued with Make Up For Ever's HD Foundation. I cannot stress how insanely incredible this product is - full coverage, never cakey, seemless application, and NO BREAK OUTS!!! I'm actually going to dedicate an entire post to my ravings! Finally, I dusted with Tarte's Hotel Heiress Bronzer - very light application as I already had the spray tan, golden effect to boot.

• On cheeks, I chose to go with the unviersal Smashbox shade, Crush, from the Blush Rush line. Just a dab on the apples of the cheeks creates a truly blushed look without being overly bright and exagerated.
  
• I used Senna's Lace highlighter (powder) on my cheek bone and brow bone, and created a V shape on my forehead to emphasize those areas. Shading is everything...
• Lips were left simple. Just a gloss. I chose Prescriptives Colorscope Lip Gloss in Stylish which I layered over Stila's Lip Glaze in Grapefruit (an old favorite pink staple lippy).
• 
  

And then it was off to enjoy the evening...

GET NICOLE RICHIE'S HIPPY-CHIC CURLS!

In a recent magazine interview, Nicole Richie gushed about her favorite stylist tip: How to make curls with a flat iron.

My interest was immediately piqued. I raced over to The Andy Lecompte Salon where I asked my hair stylist guru, Jen Atkin, to explain (and do it on my mane, of course!).

Now, I'm sharing my new found knowledge with all of you!

Jen calls this look hippy chic, like what you see on Nicole Richie or Blake Lively (cool with me - I dig both of their styles). The curls are much more natural and effortless looking, not so volumized and oversized (or even tight and bouncy).

First, you'll need a flat iron - 1 inch works the best. Jen suggest the Chi by Global Beauty. It's ceramic so it doesn't snag or severely damage the hair.

Next, split hair in half from the nape of your neck and separate into sections.

Grab big, long vertical chunks and, with the flat iron, start half-way down the shaft of your hair and curl the hair AROUND the iron and BACK away from your neck (Not to Self: this look does not, and is not meant to, create volume - so don't even attempt curling from the roots!).

Continue with the rest of the sections.

It's literally THAT easy - and it only took about 7 minutes to do my entire head (and I have long, thick hair!).

So, when pinched for time - or if you're feeling adventurous and want to try a new do - perform the flat iron curl on your mane!

Emmys Spotlight: Kelly Kruger

Our dear friend, actress Kelly Kruger, looked so fab at the Emmys on Sunday night. From the dress (Dolce and Gabbana) to the jewels (H. Stern) to the feminine hair and makeup, Kelly rocked the red carpet!



In this **exclusive** Beauty Banter interview, Kelly dishes on how she achieved the look:

"Pam Phillips is an amazing makeup artist and hair stylist I met while working on KNIGHT RIDER. She worked on LAS VEGAS with Molly Simms and is often responsible for her gorgeous red carpet looks.

The inspiration started with an Audrey Hepburn sophisticated girly look but we kept modifying it as we went along.

First, we started with hair. My hair is so long, thick and heavy and we wanted to find a way to get it off my face and have it look soft and feminine but in a way that it wouldn't fall after an hour.

She started by curling with an iron and clipped each curl to keep them really tight while we did makeup. After makeup was done she let the curls out and randomly started pinning them back. The result was a soft, feminine yet imperfect updo. It felt sophisticated and sexy at the same time.

I am obsessed w airbrush face makeup!!! It leaves a flawless finish with amazing coverage and never looks cakey! Plus, it lasts all night and I never have to touch it up!

A great tip I learned from Pam:
*Always do your eyes first and base last because makeup will always fall on your face and its so much cleaner to do it that way.

Pam used Vincent Longo shadows in beige shimmer colors (they don't make anymore) on lid, charcoal in corner crease and lined with Bobby Brown gel liner in black.

We curled my normally straight lashes and the result was incredible!!! I didn't know the importance of an eyelash curler until I met Pam! The Shu Uemura lash curler is my new best friend. It opens up my eyes in a way I didn't think possible with my super straight lashes.
She used MAC fleur power blush to get a soft rosy fresh look and finished with MAC lip liner in cranberry all over the lip with lip fusion gloss in sun over the liner.

I was incredibly happy with the outcome!"

Emmys Spotlight: America Ferrara

There's no denying that Ugly Betty actress America Ferrara looked sizzling at the 60th Annual Primetime Emmys.


Fekkai stylist Daniel Howell tended to her tresses. Here's how he achieved the "modern day Veronica Lake" curls:

Using a 3/4
inch curling iron start at the nape of the neck and wrap the hair from 
middle to root. Make sure all the hair is going in the same direction 
making it a repetitious pattern. Then use the next size curling iron on the 
ends of the hair. Go through the entire head from right side to left side.
 Clip the hair into desired waves close to the scalp. Remove clips and brush 
out curls for a soft finish. Set with FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY."

Get Anne Hathway's GET SMART Look...

As you may or may not know, actress Anne Hathaway was named Lancome's spokesmodel and brand ambassador back in January of 2008. So, it comes as no surprise that when Annie readies herself for red-carpet events, Lancome is there to paint her famous face.

Last Thursday, Lancôme hosted a special screening of Get Smart with Anne at the private Core Club in New York City. The screening benefited the Lollipop Theater Network, a charitable organization that Anne is involved in. The organization provides first-run movies to children with serious illnesses who otherwise would miss seeing these movies in the theaters due to their long hospital stays.

Congrats to Annie for being an actress who not only graces us with her talent and beauty, but also gives back to those in need!

And now, on to the beauty tip. Lancome gave us an inside peek into Anne's beauty preparation so that you too can recreate the look. Says Lancome:

"Celebrity makeup artist Julie Harris did Anne’s makeup for the screening. Anne has the most gorgeous porcelain skin (she’s a major proponent of sunscreen) so Julie played up her eyes, cheeks and lips. She used Lancôme black liquid Artliner on the upper lash line to make Anne’s eyes pop and added a few coats of Lancôme Hypnôse mascara, giving her lashes a beautiful boost of volume and length. Julie added just a touch of color to the apples of the cheeks with Giorgio Armani Sheer Cream Blush #2. She set the look by dusting Laura Mercier translucent powder all over Anne’s face. Julie opted for a soft neutral colored pout and finished the look with Lancôme Color Design Lipcolor in B-List."
