Bathing Beauty: Jeanine Lobell

I am so excited about this post, as I'm sure you will be too. Today's bathing beauty is a true beauty legend, a woman I admire greatly in the industry, the founder of Stila Cosmetics, celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell! She's worked on some of the most famous faces including Natalie Portman and Penelope Cruz and created some of the most memorable products -- Stila Lip Glaze in Papaya and Convertible color in Poppy are personal favorites!

She's witty, savvy, smart, successful and she knows her beauty stuff. Naturally, I had to ask her my 7 favorite beauty related questions. Here's what Jeanine had to say:

Jeanine and husband Anthony Edwards

What are your top 5, can't-live-without products?
1. Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 because it makes people's skin look flawless, not cakey with foundation.
2. Chanel Inimitables Mascara because it gives big fluffy thick lashes.
3. YSL Fuchsia Lipstick because it makes everyone look like a sexy Parisian.
4. Chanel Le Crayon Yeux Decision Eye Definer in Teak because its soft and makes brown eyes look gold.
5. Stila Lillium Convertible Cheek Color because its not peach and not pink but right in the middle.

What is your all-time favorite product?
I don't have an all-time favorite but my take to a deserted island product would be Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream because it does so many things!!!

What product do you buy in bulk?
I don't really buy products as I have loads of industry pals I can hit up and I go in fazes on my obsessions, but right now I am living for Clark's Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip Balm.

You moisturize your face with...
Amore Pacific Moisture Bound Vitalizing Creme and am obsessed with it!

Favorite body product?
I use a body oil spray from Norma Kamali called barxv.

Favorite beauty secret you've picked up along the way?
I have many beauty secrets and can't tell them all, but for me it's all about using a ton of moisturizer every day several times a day. It's kept those pesky wrinkles away.

Beauty icon you admire?
Audrey Hepburn. She looked so amazing as she aged, wrinkles and all.

Happy 50th, Barbie!

Can you believe it? Barbie is a half a century old (yet she doesn't look a day over 21 -- I need some of her beauty cream!). In honor of Barbie's birthday celebration, interior decorator extraordinaire, Jonathan Adler took a Malibu mansion and transformed it into a chic, Barbie dream house.

A bit of Barbie History:
The first Barbie was introduced at the New York Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. She was Barbie, the Teen-Age Fashion Model. Ruth Handler, creator of the Barbie doll (and mega millionaire), says that "Barbie has always represented that a woman has choices... She had the clothes, for example, to launch a career as a nurse, a stewardess, a nightclub singer..." As of 2009, Barbie has 108 careers! Ken was introduced in 1961. Midge, the best friend, in 1963.

Last night, I ventured to Malibu for a look at the life of the original girl power doll, Barbie!

From a real Andy Warhol painting of the birthday girl, to a Barbie shrine room housing Barbie's from every era, a chandelier entirely made of Barbie hair, to custom B-embroidered carpet and lampshades, to a closet solely consisting of pink Christian Louboutin heels, to a Dylan's Candy Bar Corner, Barbie's dream house is both girly and glamorous (with loads of pink, naturally).

Here are some pics:

The Original Barbie

Barbie's Vanity

Barbie Mirror

Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian wishing Barbie a very Happy Birthday

Barbie's (and Ken) Bedroom

Rack of Loubs (Barbie is one lucky diva)

Hair Chandelier (yes, that is real Barbie hair!)

Living Room

Click HERE for a dozen more pics (including the original Ken doll and Andy Warhol painting)!

Swag bag included the 2009 Bathing Suit Barbie, a Jonathan Adler for Barbie black and pink mini vase, a Barbie Heart Stila Eye Shadow Trio and Lip Glaze Set (an homage to the Stila/ Barbie collab), Dylan's Candy Bar Barbie through the years chocolates, and a Patricia Field for Barbie t-shirt that reads, "I want my dream house."

Hey, I'd settle for Barbie's dream house!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE

A pinch of red... a "blushed" stain... makeup without looking made up...

Stila's Lip Glaze in Cranberry is my current obsession. It's part stain, part gloss, all fabulous color. The consistency is perfect - never gooey but definitely shiny - and full of natural color.

The lip glaze was part of the Stila Backstage with Lela Rose kit and it's meant to give lips that "just-ate-a-basket-of-berries" flushed glow. Use a little and you're lips have that very natural red hue, use more and you'll get a nice evening out red color.

But here's my trick: I LOVE this product on the apples of my cheeks. Not too much, just a dab - enough to give a glowing, berry stained, au natural color with a hint of sheen. It's so easy to wear and versatile, I carry it in my purse for those "just in case" moments.... (a date? drinks with friends? a cute boy in the car next to me?).

The Stila Lip Glazes come in dozens of envy-inducing colors (another favorite is grapefruit - a pinkish hue).

Stila and Lela Rose

New York Fashion Week is around the corner... and we're just itching to see the faces that strut down that runway! What will be 2009 trend? Colored lashes, cat eyes, perhaps purple lips?

To quench our desire for runway beauty, Stila has hooked up with Lela Rose to create the Stila Backstage Lela Rose Makeup Collection!

The goodies come packaged in the cutest silver cylinder and include the 4 products used by the makeup artists backstage at the 2009 Lela Rose fashion show.

Here are the products and how each was used to create the runway look:

Inspiration: Subtle with a sophisticated twist.

Stila Sun Shade 01 was used to bronze the models' cheekbones. I've heard amazing raves about this bronzer... it has buildable color so you can control the shade.

Cranberry Lip Glaze popped the models' pouts (the lip glazes are fabulous! Part stain, part gloss - and they look amazing on all skin types). **Beauty Banter FAVE**

Starlight Eye Shadow let the lids shimmer with a champagne glow

Major Lash Mascara in Brown completed the look and helped to create a balanced, feminine face.

The kit is sold exclusively through beauty.com.

PRICE TAG: $34.00

Stila and Barbie - It's NOT All About the Sex!

First there was MAC and Fafi... MAC and Heatherette... MAC and Hello Kitty (dying - coming very soon). Now, Stila's jumping on the collaboration train!

For Barbie's 50th Anniversary (she looks so good for her age!), she will team up with Stila Cosmetics to bring her signature and whimsical looks to life (and if we're lucky, her waist size too!).

The collaboration will kick-off in February with four colorful "Decades of Beauty Cans" filled with Stila favorites and Barbie beauty looks iconic of the past 5 decades.

The four "cans" are:

Ponytail Doll from 1959

Malibu Doll from 1971

Foxy Doll from 1980

Jewel Doll from 2000

What happened to Reality Whore doll of 2006-2009?! Kidding (slightly)...

Each can contains two eye shadows and a cheek color or bronzer, as well as a lip product, and a mascara or liner.

Available in February exclusively at Sephora (although I'm hearing that beauty addicts are snatching them up as soon as last week!).

I can just see it now--a world full of life-sized Barbies--wait, that's Hollywood! DUH!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE!

Here's a cool spin on things: a bronzing POWDER with SPF... yes, I know it's been around for some time but it's a current obsession of mine, and due to the heat, I felt it was quite timely.

Pre-summer, PTR launched their Instant Mineral Powder SPF's... I didn't really care for this product. I really wanted to love it, but I just couldn't. It was messy and the powder either exploded from the brush or barely came out at all. And I could never get the darn top back on without blugeoning the bristles! Needless to say, I wasn't a fan (and I usually love all things PTR!).

(sadly, no go)

But then on a recent jaunt to Sephora I discovered Stila's Sun Bronzing Powder with SPF 15. It's actually a near-perfect "natural" colored tan that also offers sun protection. Two products for the price of one... we love it! (Although, as always, you should be using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 45 with both UVA and UVB screening filters... but this is a great addition to your everyday sunscreen.)

(the bomb!)

The powder is pressed - which means no messes! - and it comes in two shades - shade 1 (sheer golden matte bronze) and shade 2 (sheer warm matte bronze). I use shade 2 because I have naturally darker skin. Even without the spf (although this is a great summer beach bag must-have) this bronzer would still be amazing and worth the purchase! After all, it is Stila's "best-selling bronzing powder formula." How can you go wrong?!

Life With A Silver Spoon...

I was a lucky guest at the Silver Spoon winter gift-giveaway... and WOW did I walk away with some incredible beauty products!

The gifting suites were held at Voda Spa (read my post on the fabulous Russian bath house HERE) and such savvy brands like Stila Cosmetics, Ted Gibson, Frilly Lilly, La Fleur, Weleda, and The Face Shop, were in attendance.

I have to play around with the products but I can tell that I'm going to LOVE the Weleda Wild Rose Moisturizing Cream (I'm already such a fan of the Weleda Calendula Cream), Stila Smokey Eye Palette that actually speaks to you, and The Face Shop Volcanic Ash Heating Mask (from Korea... the entire line looks absolutely incredible!).

Lots of goodies... it feels like Christmas all over again! Thanks Silver Spoon!

Christmas Is Coming Early...

We adore a good Holiday collection over here at Beauty Banter. Holiday Collections mean that Christmas is just around the corner, and Christmas means that the weather is getting cooler, the air is getting muskier and the days are getting shorter! Don't get us wrong, we LOVE the sun too - but there's just something so... cozy about Christmas time!

Here are a couple of our favorite products from a couple of our favorite companies (to view the entire collection, click the company heading):

Smashbox Beyond Beauty Holiday 2007
Smashbox is ALL about fresh and clean. We're loving the Beyond Beauty Fusion Eye & Cheek Palettes: 8 neutral eye and cheek colors that can be worn alone or blended together!

Stila Dazzle & Dream
Stila has made the make-up process as simple as a single compact! Guinevere's Deluxe Palette and Scarlett's Deluxe Palette both include 3 eyeshadows, a blush and a lip gloss. And it comes wrapped in a gorgeous Swarovski decorated case! We love the Guinevere's Deluxe Palette - a combination of warm golds, apricots and peaches! And they all shimmer like the ornaments on a Christmas tree!

Nars Holiday 2007
Golds and apricots for the eyes, crimson for the lips (this collection reminds me of a pumkin patch!) The Balthazar Duo Eyeshadow pairs a burned yellow with a pumpkin pie colored orange. But my favorite product in this collection is the Viridiana Lipstick. A dark, blood-red hue reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour and perfect for that special Holiday party!

Bobbi Brown Metallics
Silver and blue shimmers for the eyes with pale lips. The Midnight Metallics eye palette has 3 shimmering shades - white, silver and blue. We're feeling the white, all over the eye, with a dark black liquid liner. Very snow flake...

The Make-Up Break Down...

...How to achieve the look in 5 simple steps, that should take NO LONGER then 10 minutes... MAX!

Hair-crazed Jenny was in town this weekend and I decided to do a quick and easy make-over on her! She liked - LOVED - it so much that she immediately went out to buy the products!

**1** FOR THE FACE:
Keep it simple. Combine a bronzer, moisturizer AND coverage.
My Picks: Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer with a dab of Clinique True Bronze Bronzing Gel in Sunlit Bronze. If you need more moisture, add a dollop of your favorite moisturizer - more coverage, add a bit of your favorite foundation. Then mix all of the products in your hand and apply to face like you would a face moisturizer!
The Look: Flawless complexion with a hint of hue!

**2** FOR THE CHEEKS:
It's all about adding just the right amount of color AND highlight.
My Picks: A dab of MAC Ablaze and a dab of MAC Northern Exposure. I dab each together (even amounts) on the brush and then apply. Obviously, work with the product to see what looks best on your skin-tone.
The Look: These colors work great with just about any skin tone - some people may need more of the highlighter (Northern Exposure) and less of the bold color (Ablaze). The look is natural and healthy!

**3** FOR THE EYES:
Too much eye make-up tends to leave a person looking like the victim of a fist fight. My eye make-up routine is quick in that you use a base color and play with a couple of other colors as "crease colors" just on the outer corners of your eyes! I highly suggest buying some sort of eye shadow trio or quad. It makes the guessing work virtually nonexistant. All of the colors WILL work together!
My Pick: MAC's Smoking Eyes Eye Shadow 4. Work the lightest shade over the entire eye lid. Then combine a dab of the two darker shades on the brush and apply to the crease and/ or outer corner. You never really need to use the darkest color unless you want to line your eyes or you are going to a black tie affair and feel the need for some drama(tic) eyes!
The Look: A more natural take on the smokey eye.

**4** And for mascara, CLICK HERE
to read my extensive mascara coverage. Just choose a brand that works for you. You don't wanna have to spend hours in front of the mirror seperating your lashes or creating volume and length. The right mascara will do this with one stroke of it's wand! As for color, I say always choose BLACK! Black makes everyone's eyes pop!

**5** FOR THE LIPS:
There are so many colors and products to choose from, most promising the same exact thing: BIGGER LIPS! Here's my take - pick a hue that works for YOU, not one that is "of the now." Don't go too dark or too light. Something in the middle, without too much frost, usually does the trick. And if you want bigger lips, line the middle of the top and bottom lip with a NUDE pencil, blend it, then apply your favorite lippy.
My Picks: MAC Lustre Barely Lit with Stila Lip Glaze in Grapefruit. Finding YOUR color is all about layering!
The Look - Natural mauve with a hint of shine!

What's YOUR look? Tell us in the comment box!

To Blue or Not To Blue...

Blue is like the new black. At least, as far as eye shadow is concerned. (check the runways... they never lie!)
So, I decided to try it myself... I wore blue to (gasp) a Rod Stewart concert!!! I'm not sure if it was the 80's love or my fierce eyes, but blue was bold.

Here's what I did:

To start, I used a base color... something neutral. I like Nars' All About Eve. I put this on the width of my eye.

Next, I used Tinte Cosmetics Shimmering Face Pearls in Midnight Blue. I used a thin brush, wet it, and applied it first like eyeliner above and below my eye. Then, I used a contour brush and applied the loose powder to my lids, just below the brow bone.

Finally, I used Stila's Kajal Eye Liner in Sapphire to line the inside of my eyes. This eyeliner could almost be mistaken for black if it weren't for the lightest navy hue. I loved this liner!!! It wasn't as aggressive as black but it was still a statement.

Try the blue look and tell us what products you used! Email beautybanter@gmail.com

'Tis the Season...

(pre-NYC transformation)
I spent the past weekend in New York updating my Winter beauty look, and let me tell you, it was quite a glamorous transformation. I died my ever-oxidized blonde locks into a healthier and richer chocolate brown - thanks to the fabulous fingers of uber-colorist, Ludovic at The Pierre Michel Salon. Ludovic has been beautifying A-list clients including Sharon Stone and Michelle Williams for the past 13 years, so needless to say, I was in good hands. Why brown? "Chocolate brown is the color this Winter because it is warmer for the skin," says Ludovic.
Next, I marched on over to the newly opened Sephora on Lexington Avenue and Fifty-Eight Street. The trend of the moment is golden eyes - the more shimmer, the better - and red lips. For blush, a just-walked-in-from-the-cold look is natural and necessary.
So here it is: The Ultimate Beauty Whore... transformed!
(post-NYC transformation)
On eyes, Laura Mercier Eye Book, exclusive for the Holiday Season. I blended the golden color with a bit of the burnt brown in my crease and under my lids. On lips, Bourjois Rouge Heprfix in Rouge Ultime 7. On cheeks, what else but Stila's Convertible color in POPPY!
Send us your Winter wonderland transformations! And remember, it's all about color!

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE

(me posing in Cover Girl's Smoothwear Lip Tints Barely Berry, #210)
Anyone who has read this blog knows that I have a fondness for red. In an August post, I wrote a Weekly Must-Have citing Stila's POPPY convertable lip color as the "Bentley of all reds..."
Well now I stand corrected.
On a recent shoot that I did, a friend of mine turned me onto Cover Girl's Smoothwear Lip Tints, a new product by the Procter & Gamble team. I reluctantly tried the gloss over my Labello Cherry chap stick (another red-tinted lippy) and to my surprise, I actually loved the way that it made my lips look. It wasn't hooker red yet it gave my pucker the desired "volume" (plump) that so many red glosses cease to create. It also wasn't gooey or smelly and it didn't bleed into the cracks of my mouth (another MAJOR problem with reds...). So, kuddo's to Cover Girl and their new and improved line of lip tints. I'm a major fan!

Try Barely Berry, #210 (right). The perfect blend of gloss and color - a chic red worn alone or over your favorite lip stick.

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE

For the most part, I stay away from red (red clothing, red make-up, red hair – my colorist actually says that the two hardest tones to strip from the hair are red and black – but there I go again digressing…). After all, red is a tough color to rock. Disaster is practically certain. But we’ve found the Bentley of all lip and cheek colors – Poppy by Stila. This creamy convertible compact adds the perfect hue to any skin tone – natural and sheer enough so that you won’t feel like Strawberry Shortcake or a bleeding (we’re talking lip color here!) Courtney Love.

I've gotta say that I wear this color almost everyday... my friend Caroline turned me onto the compact and since then, I've been rocking the red on my lips and cheeks... either alone (very daytime) or layered with other products to create an edgier, rock and roll look.
Here's my girl Caroline and myself, both donning a touch of poppy:

To use: Dot on cheekbones and blend upwards. Apply with lipbrush or finger tips to lips and pat with a tissue. For an evening look, apply a clear gloss on top of the red stain.

Cameron Diaz is a fan too! She donned the look in CHARLIE’S ANGELS. Source.
